Question about Toshiba Satellite A105 Notebook

Toshiba A105-S4344 DVD-ROM not working

I purchased the above PC in Nov. 2006. My computer stopped recognizing CD-ROM after one year. After couple of months it started recognizing it without doing anything and was working for only few days and again stopped working. Because CD-ROM is not working, booting takes very long time. It waits for long time when TOSHIBA logo is on while booting. When CD-ROM started working for few days, booting was normal i.e. quick.

Please help me solve this problem. (Could it be loose connection inside and that is why it started working automatically for few days?)

Thanks,

Krishna Naidu

Possible a loose connection, check to ensure you close the drive until a check is heard.check device manager to ensure device is listed and then go to its 'properties' ensure the current devis is recognized.you could also do a remove device, reboot, and have OS recognize a new device.clean the device with a lens cleaner.

Recovery Issues A105-s361. Boot sequence always starts with HDD. Tried F12, tried F2 (bios). Any other way to boot from recovery disk(CD-ROM)!!

There is still a way for you to boot from your CD ROM. Just access or go to BIOS again, look for "BOOT" tab and then set the boot sequence of your computer and the set the first priority to be on the (ODD or CD DVD ROM), just make sure you put the CD ROM option at the first section and to do that, Use the arrow keys on your keyboard and highlight it and then press normally "F5 and F6" further instruction are there any way. Once your done, press F10 and select save and exit, Insert the disc on the CD ROM restart your computer at that time your computer should be booting now from the CD ROM.

The drive is faulty. You need to replace the drive. The reason the DVD still works is because a combo drive has 2 different lasers; one for the CD and one for the DVD. So the CD laser is faulty.

DVD broken - How to replace it

Hi,

I found this on the toshiba website http://askiris.toshiba.com/ToshibaSupportSite/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=ex&bbid=bb35&url=&dialogID=45113241&stateId=0%200%2045111928

Basically it says 'If the internal CD or DVD drive is removable, it's usually secured in place by a locking switch and a separate eject switch / lever on the bottom or side of the computer.'

I couldn't find a decent manual with pictures, hopefully this helps

Toshiba problem

On boot go into your BIOS and set your CD/DVD ROM drive to first in the boot order options, then with the CD/DVD in the drive reboot your computer and wait for a prompt to "Press any key to boot to this CD" and do so (you'll only have a couple of seconds so be ready or reboot again) and you then will be taken through the loading of files until you get to your partition/install screen options, where you'll delete the partition that your OS is on, then create a new one and then format that partition and install XP on it.
