Question about Whirlpool Refrigerators

1 Answer

Whirlpool refrigerator Model # ETIRHMXKT 4163522 Water is leaking from back of freezer compartment and then freezing on floor of freezer compartment. Ice maker is only making partial ice cubes (not solid, water filled). When they fall into ice tray they breakup and freeze into one massive ice slab. Also, water is leaking down the back side of refrigerator compartment and then freezing. I am catching the water in containers where it freezes.

My bottom mounted freezer continues to freeze up and leaks a small puddle on the floor

You have a drain hole behind the rear wall of the freezer compartment. You will need to remove the shelves, screws and clean the hole of ice and gunk. here is a video below.

Water freezes in bottom of freezer and then leaks out onto floor

I am pretty sure you are having a defrost drain blockage problem. Most defrost every eight hours and over a period of time the drain line that comes down from freezer into a cup like object top middle and back of the fresh food section. If blocked by gunk or ice you will see trails of liquid leaking down the rear wall of fresh food compartment until it reaches the crisper drawers. This is not always the same with every model as you may see frozen ice flowing down ther rear wall of freezers on side by sides. Here is an example Click here=> Whirlpool Leak Photo taken by TechnicianBrian He has been around a good bit and deserves credit for his contributions. Here is another way to make this look more si mple in clip below. TechnicianBrian.com And in this photo are several parts listed in photo group #1 were it is most likely running down the wall=> MagicChef CTB1921AR fresh food section. If you still have questions please ask and rate me if I was able to explain this well enough. Every refrigerator is made different so these are examples only. The key is to find if ice or just gunk has blocked you defrost drain. Unplug and then remove the rear panel in back of freezer. We need to see if the water is overflowing the condensate drain tray or if the blockage is in the turn the drain leads down back of your refrigerator. Much more on this page=> Leaking Refrigerators! Whirlpool refrigerator (top freezer) is leaking into bottom of fridge. What can it be?

Hi, read about your problem. What's happening is your drain in the freezer compartment in the back behind wall is plugged. Defrost water then builds up under freezer floor and freezes. To fix, remove back wall. Also the floor needs to be opened up. Use a blow dryer to clear ice out of drain, in the trough, and under the floor. Hope this helps

Water dripping from freezer into refrigerator area and frozen water in freezer

The defrost cycle is melting ice that will not go down the drain tube in the rear of the freezer. This can be a clogged tube due to debris, organic growths or ice blocking flow. What doesn't end up dripping into the fridge ends up freezing in the freezer compartment. Make sure the fridge is level or tilted back slightly.

Unplug the fridge from power. Remove the contents of the freezer and remove the ice maker, back wall plate and floor plate in the freezer section. Remove ice build up on the floor and tray in the freezer by thawing and soaking up water. Flush hot water (use a turkey baster to get at it) at the opening of the drain hose that is connected to the tray to thaw any ice.. once flowing to the evapraor tray under the fridge, mix up 1/2 oz of bleach and 4 oz of water and pour down the tube to kill any bacteria.

Reassemble and restock the freezer. Monitor the temperature of the fresh food (34 deg) and freezer (0 deg) compartments. If you notice the temperatures start to climb, there may be a problem with the defrost timer, terminator, etc. and may require a pro's help.

Good luck!

Water pools and freezes at bottom of the freezer. When tray is full water leaks out of freezer onto kitchen floor.

I am uncertain as to what you mean by "when tray is full"? However, you probably have a clogged drain in the freezer compartment. During the defrost cycle, which usually occurs every eight hours, defrost components (defrost thermostat & heater(s) ) melt the ice that has accumulated on the evaporator coil in the freezer compartment. The water from the melted ice drains through a hole in the freezer compartment (behind the freezer's rear panel) and accumulates in a drain pan below the refrigerator. This water should evaporate over time, whereby you should not have to regularly empty the drain pan. If the drain hole is clogged (usually from algae or other debris, etc.), the water finds another path to flow (which is inside the bottom of your freezer compartment). This water will usually freeze. Water will then flow toward the front of your freezer compartment and out of the door on to the floor when you open the door.

Contact an appliance service company to unclog your freezer drain. Also have them check your defrost components (thermostat & heater(s)).

Water dripping in the refrigerator and freezes on the top shelf. It seems to be coming from the freezer compartment. There is a square piece of metal missing from the top of the main compartment. One can...

Removed everything from the freezes. Removed a false bottom from the freezer floor, 2 screws. There was an ice build up under this plastic bottom. I let the ice melt with the de-frost cycle (or frost free cycle). No more water dripping into the refrigerator compartment.

Freezer leaking water

My Whirlpool has been filling the bottom under the crispers with water and leaking out the vents (?) from the freezer down into the fridge compartment. I finally caught it today being rather loud, probably in a defrost cycle, and it was positively POURING in the fridge. After some more research on this site I removed the freezer bottom tray (1/4" ratchet needed) and found a layer of 1/2" thick ice under the tray. My guess is the drain hole iced up. Removed all the ice from under the tray and on the metal drain run in the back (danger, seemed sharp) and put it all back together. I didn't try to pour hot water down the drain yet, thinking positive thoughts that the drain itself isn't iced all the way to the tray near the floor. Will watch it carefully.
