Dell laptop not working

The screen reads operating system not found

  • Iberon Jul 06, 2008

I have a dell inspiron 1501, with windows vista home premium. I have had my laptop for around a year and a half, and within the last few months my lap top has been randomly freezing, then, a blue screen flashes for a second, and finally it crashes. It will then restart saying "operating system not found". This problem is becoming a lot more frequent (and irritating) and i would be forever grateful f anyone who can give me a solution. I am not very good with technical talk, so please if you respond to this, use simple terms i can understand!! Thanks :D

Operating System not found, if the partition became corrputed you will get mbr missing or became corrputed. Not on the Inspiron 1501, just said on a blank screen operating system not found. Recovery tool on Vista, said it was recover to and earlier point and was succesfull, but when you restart it comes back to same message. BIOS shows and detects the hard drive, any operating system shows the partion and file format. Formated the hard drive, same problem. Install new hard drive same, Dell's diagnostics run several times, hard drive passes. Dell support is useless since they're repeating the same procedures as me. Any clues? Could it be the motherboard? Any help will be much apprieciated. Dell Inspiron 1501-1GB Ram-Hitachi 80 GB HD, Gforce video. Thanks.

If your dell comes with a recovery disk set stick the disk in the drive and go through the steps. If it doesn't go to the store and grab a copy of Windows, or if your like me screw windows get a copy of linux ubuntu or opensuse 11 for free and install it on the system. The problem is file have either been deleted or corrupted in the operating system and it can no longer be booted. BUT BUT BUT try this before anything above.

Grab a windows cd or if you got vista, grab a vista dvd and go into the recover console after booting into it and click repair. Most likly your bootloader has been wiped clean. So you need to re install the bootloader. Google "windows vista reinstall bootloader".

Ya sounds like the hard drive has died or there is a interface problem since you suffered from water damage. you may be able to get data off the hard drive by using a external hard drive connector but it may or may not work.

Repair start up

i found this very good guide: 1. If your operating system is XP, CTRL and F11 key simultaneously when you see the dell logo after turning on the Laptop and follow the screen instructions.

* Power the computer on.
* When the Dell screen appears press and hold the CTRL and F11 key simultaneously on the keyboard, then release them both at the same time.
The Dell PC Restore by Symantec window appears.
* Click the Restore button or press the key to highlight Restore and press the key.
A caution message appears advising that all data will be lost.
* Click the Confirm button or press the key to highlight Confirm and press the key.
The Progress window appears. Once the process is begun, Dell PC Restore usually takes only 8 to 10 minutes to complete.
When the restore is complete, the message The system recovery process was successful appears.
* Click the Finish button or press the key to highlight Finish and press the key.
The computer will restart.

2. If your operating system is VISTA / Win 7, tap F8 key when you see the dell logo. It will take you to advanced boot menu options under which you will see Repair your Computer, Select that option and enter your password if it asked, then you will be seeing list of options like system restore, command promt, etc., In that the last option says Dell PC restore or some thing like that. Select that option and follow the screens .. Thats it.

* Start the computer.
* As the computer starts, press the F8 key until the Advanced Boot Options menu appears on the screen.
* Press the (Down Arrow) to select Repair Your Computer on the Advanced Boot Options menu, and then press Enter.
* Specify the language settings that you want, and then click Next.
* Log in as a user who has administrative credentials, and then click OK.
* Click Dell Factory Image Restore.
* In the Dell Factory Image Restore window, click Next.
* Click to select the check box for Yes, reformat hard drive and restore system software to factory condition.
* Click Next. The computer is restored to the default factory configuration.
* When the restore operation is completed, click Finish to restart the computer.

3. If in both case, the Factory default didn't work, then your laptop's factory image defaults partition have vanished (i.e. Corrupted / Deleted). So you have to do Operating System re installation with the Operating System CD / DVD shipped along with laptop. Follow the below link to install windows XP Pro on your own.

I have dell inspiron 1764. Froze. Restarted, after loading from blue Dell Inspiron bar came up with screen saying operating system not found

Press key and the power button to initiate diagnostic testing on your laptop. You want to see if there are any hardware errors, specifically the hard drive. If all tests pass then your operating system software is corrupted and needs to be re-installed.

I had just purchased a Dell Inspiron N4010 laptop 2 months ago. It work well until few days ago. It hangs whilst at the screen 'starting windows'. After that it showed the message of 'check cable...

hello miss sally, hi, the operating system error may be caused by a faulty hard disk or hard disk connection cable, and the hanging thing is caused by a faulty memory module, so check then out first, swap a new memory module, and for your hard drive, take it out from your laptop and use a PC to test the drive (applicable only if your hard drive is sata.)

sounds like either your operating system ie. Windows is corrupt and needs to be reinstalled or your Hard drive is faulty, which means you will need to buy a new hard drive.

Operating system not found media test failure will not reboot aspire 3680

Installing an operating system from one computer and inserting it into another computer will not work specially when they are from different manufacturers because the components in them are different.
The Windows install has to be done on the intended computer.
The media test failure error message refers to a faulty disk controller or a faulty hard disk.
