A quick look on the Internet and the DELL support side indicates the flashing caps lock light is the result of a SDRAM memory fault. It flashes 10 times, after which all led lights above the keyboard go off. have you installed new memory lately? Maybe it cam loose. If not swapping out the memory may solve your problem.

Hello Linda,
The flashing "A" sounds as though you have the caps lock on. Try hitting the caps lock key to see if it will go off.
Thank You,

I can't even get to my desktop. It's not loading right. Won't start up properly.

what happens when you try to start/boot the laptop? Take note if the num lock, caps lock, scroll lock are blinking, off, or steadily lit up. If the system does not turn on at all, try to remove and reconnect the memory modules, the hard disk and CD/DVD drive and try to turn on the laptop using only the adapter and test it as well using only the battery. Let us know how it goes

Hi
You probably have a mother board issue. Most likely the video chip. Take this to a reputable repair person or check my website www.micromendllc.com.

Dell latitude d505 wont start up. When I press the power button a flashing padlock shows up but the screen never turns on, then the flashing padlock stops, and thats the end.

The flashing padlock should have an "A" in it. That is the caps lock. The flashing caps lock indicates a problem with the memory slot. Try removing memory and replacing. If it continues and you have two modules, take both out and try one at a time. One of your memory modules or slots might have gone bad

The 3 LED's (Num Lock, Caps Lock, Scroll Lock) are used by Dell to diagnose no-post issues such as yours. The only error code close to yours is [Num Lock ON, Caps Lock FLASHING, Scroll Lock ON]. This indicates a a memory error. Try reseating the memory modules. If you have 2 memory modules, insert one at a time to determine the faulty module.
