Question about Whirlpool Washing Machines

1 Answer

Fabric softener tray

The wash cycle doesn't empty the softener from the left of the three trays, the one with the syphon tube in it.

Thanks for the comment. I don't think the mechanism is broken, just aiming in the wrong direction. I have changed the setting, under the lid, more to the left to see if that directs water to that tray.

If this is a front load youll have to take the cover panel off the washer ,to get access to the left side where the dispenser is.The cover top panel has 2-3 screws at the back of the lid , remove them.Push the panel back as it will slide backward to remove it.Now observe the dispenser arms that control the actual water flow direction.Run the washer ,while watching this arm making sure it is not slipping in one spot.Because it probably is.If so replace the dispenser arm assembly. If this is a top load well I just waisted alot of typing here.Let me know. The model # should be listed.....

I've a Bosch avantixx washing machine and it won't empty the fabric softener unit. It has water left in or some softner. I've taken the tray out and cleaned it.

The softener unit is flushed between wash cycles to prevent clogging. What you are describing is normal operation.

After filling compartments correctly and closing the tray, I see the fabric softener emptying into the washer. Tray does not leak softener when removed and filled.

Hi,
You are putting too much in there... the tray empties on a siphon priciple... if you fill it too high it will just siphon out...

Use less fabric softener...

Washing machine will not draw fabric conditioner

The Solution: Top up the softener tray with extra water so that it is up to the 'max level' mark.

The softener tray works by a siphon action. Thus, the reason the tray does not empty is that not enough water is added by the machine during the softening cycle, so that the machine does not completely fill the softening tray; only when the softening tray is filled beyond the 'max' mark does the siphon action works. A partially filled tray will never empty - it's impossible due to the siphon.

The reason that not enough water is added to the tray during the softening action is that the water inlet of the machine is partial blocked (you can try to fix that) but it is simpler to just added more water to the conditioner tray.

Thus, the easiest way to ensure that the softener tray empties every time (after adding the softener to the softener tray of course) is to top up the softener tray with extra water, top it up to the 'max level' line (keep a bottle of water by the machine). That way, even if only a little water is added to the softener tray during the softening cycle by the machine it is enough to trigger the siphon action and the tray will empty!

Works for me every time, and no need to remove any parts - I used to take the tray out, clean it, scrub the outlet holes that fill the tray etc, but they used to gum up again quite quickly!

Hope that helps

Fridgidaire front load will not empty fabric

Hello, W/D here.

There are a couple of reasons why the fabric softener will not dispense. If everything else dispenses properly (detergent and bleach), then I would suspect a bit of plugging. If the softener remains in the dispenser, the water valve above the tray may be sticking. You'll have to get the top up to check it. If there is water in the tray, or some water/softener, then you'll need to look at the overflow cap. Here's how that works: Your dispensing trays for bleach and softener have a raised tube built into them, and each is covered with a loose fitting cap. When water is let into the tray, the level rises under the cap until it overflows, creating a syphon. The softener is literally pulled from the tray, and chased by the water. When the water stops, the tray level continues to drop, until air gets into the cap, breaking the syphon. The cap can be removed and cleaned. Sometimes the tray has to be removed first. Theres a catch towards the rear of the tray.
Best regards, W/D

The fabric dispenser does not empty

At the dispenser, remove and clean the cap that covers the tube in the dispenser tray, also clean the notch where the cap sits on the tray. The tube and cap work as a syphon, and something is not seated quite right. The softener is pulled out of the dispenser when water raises the level enough to start the syphonong effect. Once the water quits going into the dispenser tray, the syphoning continues until the level gets low enough for air to get under the cap, breaking the syphon. This usually leaves very little water in the dispenser.

My washer wont drain out the fabric softner just adds water to it. cleaned the part where i put the softner thinking it was clogged but still happening.

Usually, the softener syphons out from the tray. The tray will have a tube, the tube will have a cap. Water filling the tray forces the liquid around the cap and tube. The falling water (now inside the tube) creates a vacuum-syphon effect.
Pull the tray, remove the cap, clean and try again. Provided the water's getting there, this should help.

Regards! --W/D--

Detergent tray full of water

Hi....Lift the softener cover off the tray and you will find the syphon tube or the cover underneath are blocked. Push some wire through the syphon tube to make sure it is clear and give everything a good wash.

Water Softner Dispense wont empty - Kenmore Elite Quiet Pak 4 HE3t

I'm sure you heard a small motor running from time to time during a cycle. That moves an "arm" which sends water to the different chambers during a cycle. Fabric softener is dispensed when water goes to that chamber and dilutes the fabric softener. That chamber then empties by a siphoning action.
If you want to narrow down the problem a little to help trouble shoot -- put some wet rags in and run the Rinse and Spin cycle with some fabric softener. If the softener is not dispensed, then you know that the water isn't being sent to that chamber properly.
If you are intrepid enough to take the top off your washer, do that and see if the arm appears to be moving during a normal cycle. Maybe the arm got dislodged or broken during the move.
If water isn't being diverted properly, I think this calls for a real repair person.

Bleach and softener dispensers filled with water at end of cycle

Yes, remove the dispenser tray by pressing on the button on the softner and pulling out tray completely. Now lift the flap over the softner compartment and clean thourougly with hot water, making sure all tubes and holes are free from residue softner/detergents. Replace flap by making sure the bigger tube fits OVER the smaller tube and click into place. Replace tray. Water is present due to the "syphon effect" of the dispenser not working, caused by residue detergents blocking the tubes/holes. Oshie
