Mitsubishi Model # VS-50609

We just got this Tv and the picture is distorted it looks sort of like double vision and the colors are vary bright red and green, looks almost warped. We tried to reset the setting back to factory and it worked for about two days and now we have this distorted picture again. Do you happen to know what is wrong and how we can fix it?

where is that in the tv and how do i know what it looks like?

I have a Mitsubishi VS 50609 and for a few weeks the screen would sometimes gradually turn red, yellow, or other colors. The picture would start to shake or get "double vision". Usually it went back to normal when you tap the side of the tv. However now the tv will not stay on, it will turn it's self off after only a second or two and the screen will stay black with no sound during this time. Also when I do this several times in a row there is a smell of burning plastic. I have taken off the back and nothing looks melted, burned or broken. Can anyone suggest what I might do to fix this or is my tv beyond repair?

When you remove the rear panel then looking in from the back the large heat sink all the way over on the far left hand side has the two convergence ICs on it. The are black ICs when you remove the thin metal cover on the heat sink you will see the STK numbers stamped on the ICs

Mitsubishi VS-55609 distorted Picture Flickers

Projection TV sets are known to have two common problems. The first problem that is common to these sets is convergence failure. When this happens the TV will usually look 3D, Wavy/Distorted, etc. It may also shutdown and blink an error code.

The second common problem with Projection TV sets is dull video, halos around objects, white looking video, or red overpowers the screen. This is commonly caused by the fluid in the lens being clouded overs. To get fixed either call in a local TV repair company or goto sites such as Tv Repair Kits to get a repair kit with instructions. Here is there link.

They have put together complete kits for most models that include the parts, step by step photo instructions, repair assistance, etc.

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony,Samsung, JVC, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Akai, Pioneer, Hitachi, Zenith, and others. You can get a convergenece repair kit wiith instructions from the links below.

Hello billy218,

What is happening is that your convergence amplifier modules are beginning to go bad. These amplifiers are what amplify the signals used for convergence (how the RGB lights line up on each other) when they go bad the RGB lights tend to bow towards the center of the TV and the colors begin to mis-align. There are many sites devoted to doing the changing of the amplifiers yourself, however although these sites are accurate in give the instructions on how to change the amplifiers they do very little for actual troubleshooting and finding the underlying cause of the problem. In most cases its just that the amp modules have gone bad, but sometimes there is an overheating problem that triggers the damage. I would suggest having a TV repair person come to your place to check the problem and to fix it. The repair should cost about $250.00
