Question about Philips 60PP9202 60" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television

1 Answer

Convergence I just had a "handy man" come and replace my Convergence ICs, and while he was working on the tv, there was a spark. But no smoke and the tv was not plugged in. Any suggestions? Also, I was hoping you could help with adjusting the colors from the inside panel that has the 6 knobs (RGB and 3 focus knobs) I have been trying and trying but still no reasonable picture. Keep getting green skies, or blue grass. Kinda sucks. I would greatly appreciate help if you could. Thanks.

I just want to confirm. I found a place that has a manual for the tv for free online. You are talking about the knobs in the back right? So there is a way? I have already paid $550 for this tv. I am upset at that price right now. $300 for tv and $250 to fix convergence. When the spark happened he wasnt touching anything I was there. Weird! Anyway thanks for speedy help!

I am looking into it. I am sure it was just a owners. Do you have any idea of a good place to buy the service manual? Thanks or for even free?

Sorry for being a pest. But I bought a service manual and I have having difficulty trying to find the right place. There are 1770 pages and can't find area to fix this problem. Any ideas? Thanks alot again!

I must have another type of service manual. There were 200 pages of stuff (not including convergence) and 1500+ pages of part numbers. Oh well. I will have to mess with this thing over and over. I have no choice. Thank you for your insight.

OK, one more problem so it seems. I was adjusting the RGB and figured out that I believe the main problem is the TINT and Sharpness do not change in the menu. There is absolutely no change in picture. Thats why there is no yellow and the sky can never be blue, i think. When the so called "professional" changed out the IC's, we saw a spark toward the blue side of the housing inside. Like toward the back right side if looking into the back of the tv. TV was not plugged in, could that still be static discharge? Could that do damage? If not, or if so is there are an area where that is controlled that I can check with a multimeter? A resistor, diode or something? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your help.

The spark sounds like he accidentally touched a couple of wires together with opposite charges with power coming from the capacitors.

The settings are unique to the tv and require a service manual to set them. The default settings should have been recorded before attempting any change. Service manuals can be expensive and it may be worth just taking it to a reputable tv technician that can fix it for you. Let me know of any other questions that you may have.

good luck

yes, the knobs in the back. There are multiple types of manuals, you need the service manual, not the user manual. Which one did you find for free, most likely the user manual. No problem for the help, let me know if you have any other questions

Look at the index and go from there, try "convergence"

Yes, if the tint controls aren't working, then that would display the problems that you are seeing. The tint puts the signal out of phase to change the colors. The service manual that you bought should be able to direct you to what you can do. You should try calling Phillips about this and see what exactly they recommend as they would know specifics better than I would I expect. Please let me know how this works out.

replace the two convergence ICs and also check the low ohm resistors and pico fuses. You can get the sony convergence repair kit for most sony models from www.tvrepairworld.com which has both ICs 4 of the resistors and all 8 pico fuses plus instructions for doing the repair.

When adjusting the convergence, ended up with a concave screen, then it smoked. Is this a power supply, or worse? Is there any advice that you could give me on this...

Thats usually indicating the ICs have failed. Usually with that model its best to replace the board rather than try replacing the individual components as ther are several 3.9 ohm resistors that will need to be checked and possibly replaced along with both ICs. www.tvcircuitboards.com should have the replacement board for your model if you need one.

Hi,
It would be great to assist you in Sony convergence issue.
As you said, for some time TV shows bad convergence in picture that shows its matter of lose/ dry solder joints in D board, specially on convergence out ICs pins that need to be re-solder.
There are 2 big black ICs mounted on aluminum heat sink on D Board of TV, below image shows D Board location in TV.
Resolder pins of these 2 ICs and also check any other dry/ cold solder joints in circuit board. I do not think of IC replacement as problem occurs some time.
Let me know if you have additional question.
Thanks.

Convergence chips

The convergence IC or in a sense ,amplifiers and the resistor are output resistors... if they are burning up the current going through them is spiking too high... TO me this is an indication that the "convegence yokes" are shorted. These are coils around the tubes that control convergence. I would suspect maybe that these are shorted to ground somehow. This is my first guess for this problem
