Red light is now always on after a power failre

Had a power failure today. Now the red 'extension in use' light is staying on and there is no display. I have a dial tone and can answer a call but don't hear any sounds through handset speaker when dialing a number.

I've tried plugging and unplugging the phone line and AC adapter with no improvement.

Any ideas?
