Please repeat to download the new driver from the IBM site for T42 and reinstall it once again.
If this wont help you either, then there is a possibility that the audio output is faulty.
But make sure that the audio drivers and the media players are in line.
That could be a video card driver issue. It seems that when the projector is connected, windows detects it a create another screen using up more memory. Try download a latest video card driver for your laptop http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/license.do?filename=mobiles/1rd635ww.exe
this is for Windows 200/XP for the IBM Thinkpad T42. If that doesn't work then you should also try updating your operating system.
