I have a brand new Vizio GV42L LCD TV and right out of the box a 6" black band appears across the screen from the centre down. Comes and goes, but is there most of the times. This band retains the images it covers for about 15 seconds.

I have the same problem, and it is very upsetting. As a single mom trying to put a household back together after being cleaned out, I thought Vizio was a good buy, and got the 42''. Black box appears and stays for a long time, randomly. Sometimes, there are squiggly characters that start "typing" across the black box portion. Tonight, we cannot watch our favorite show. What is the deal?

I am looking for someone that has a good screen on their set, but has other problems with power, etc. I have a GV42L 42" manufactured in march 2007. It works perfect except the screen has a fracture on it. The warranty is voided because we damaged the screen. I can sell this to somone who has a good screen but needs boards or speakers, etc. Or I will buy your tv that has a good screen but damaged boards in it.

Hey Josh,

If this set is under warranty return it immediately. You could be looking at either a faulty LCD panel connection or a faulty LCD panel.

Hi Marvink,

black blank box is connected to CC or closed caption. from the tv controls, push the CC button and while the box is reading closed caption, push button again (maybe twice) and when it says OFF simply set the controls down, Good Luck:}

Hooking laptop to tv says invalid format on my

After it is all hooked up. You must go to main computer screen, then right-click on main windows screen,
You will see box #1 and box#2
Take the #2 box, click and hold mouse button and drag to the Left Side of #1 and let go of mouse. Get it as closely matched up to the #1 box without crisscrossing them. Just set it directly next to the box.
Then click enable this monitor and/or apply button.
Then ok,
Now your monitiors should all automatically connect and turn on.

Screen lower half goes black/blank

The lower "Y Buffer" board is defective. Best repaired by a technician, or contact Phillips support for the part if you think you are able to replace a small circuit board on your own.

42" Philips plasma screen goes black

You have a Ysus problem. Sounds like a cold solder joint or loss connections on ysus main board.

Vizio GV42L LCD TV screen black when turn TV on first time

If you are using a set top box this might be caused by turnig the box on at the same tie as you turn the tv on or slightly after you turn the tv on.  If you are using compnent or HDMI inputs the set needs to see the signal as it is turned on to know what formt the signal is in.

Flickers on cold startup after 5 min then goes away in 2-3 min.

I had same problem. Tech's said the power was noisy. I cleaned up the power but the TV still did exactly as you describe. Problem will progressively get worse with longer bouts of flickering. I was under warrenty and sent the TV back. After 3 months I am still waiting for a repalcement.
