Question about Zenith P42W34P 42 in. EDTV-Ready Plasma Television

2 Answers

Zenith P42W24B Hello. I bought this television in January 2004 with a 4 year Warranty from Best Buy. Of Course, the Warranty expired 5 months ago and when I was watching TV last night it shut itself off. I had just gotten up from the couch so I thought that I hit something on the remote. I haven't been able to get it to turn on since. The TV clicks (as it normally would when it is turned on) and the red light at the bottom of the TV turns green. About 5 seconds later, you can hear it click again (as it normally would when it is turned off) and the light turns red again. Do you have any idea of what could be causing this problem?

I posted this problem a year ago and I have not fixed the television. I am going to sell it as is and I was wondering if someone could give me any information on what the issue could be.

I had the exact same problem with mine. The TV clicks normally and the red light at the bottom of the TV turns green. About 5 seconds later it clicks again and the light turns red again.

I replaced the YSUS board and now the tv powers on no problem.

This behavior may be the power supply but that may not be the problem.
Modern power supplies are designed to shut down if the current drawn exceeds the design level which indicates that something the supply services has died.

For gear made in the period of 2003-2006 and stock that is still on hand from that period, may contain electroytic capacitors that have defective electrolyte, a chemical used in the manufacture of higher value capacitors.
The electrolyte was made from a stolen Japanese formula and improperly cloned in . . . where else? China.

There is no way to identify the problem parts besides the date code if present.

There are tons of electronic devices in service that will die due to this problem.

If you are adventurous, you might pull the plug on the set, gain access to the innards, and with good light, inspect any boards inside.
You are looking for components that are almost always cylindrical and mostly installed upright at 90 degrees to the board with leads passing through to the solde side.
This same type of component in smalled dimensions is still used in a horizontal package with leads bent down and passing though holes to the solder side.
The latter are becoming more rare since they don't lend themselves well to robot assembly.
Many (not all) will show signs of pregnancy when they fail, bulging unnaturally when compared with others. Now and then, there may be traces of a crystalline deposit around the end where the seal failed from internal pressure.

These will have values listed on them in uFd & VDC and sometimes, an plus/minus number lying about the precision.
Some also have a date code (rarer) that will look like four digits:

2403 = 24th week of 2003

Most electronics suppliers have a stock of the various values but if they have a date code at all, try to get only those made before 2002 or after 2006.

Bought a 32 inch elememt television 5 months ago stopped working november 22,2015 before the big game. Past 90 day warranty. Are there any recalls on element televisions

Probably not. Why do you think they only offer a 90-day warranty? Even the poorest quality electronics normally offer a one year parts and labor warranty. To have only 90 days coverage is a big red flag that says "Don't buy me!"

The SONY LCD TV is 2 1/2 Years old about 6 months ago I noticed a very light pink 3in vertical line, now after the tv is on for about 30 to 45 min the line is black. does any one have a clue how to fix...

Hello,
The line or dots on an LCD screen are because of dead pixels and tolerable upto a certain limit as per policy of the manufacturer. But line is not permissible and should be changed in the warranty support. The isssue you are reporting is the vertical line and the the film is to be changed. So if the set is not in warranty it might be a big expense as there is no way to fix it at home.
Thanks

Insignia(samsung) 50" plasma Vertical red lines

I would take it back. I know from purchasing an Insignia LCD from them a while back, the TV just died after about 4 or 5 months. They ended up offering me another TV or with store credit. I took the store credit and chose another TV. I also did not have a warranty. I was told since it was Insignia (which is a Best Buy house brand) that replacing it was not a problem. Good luck.

Moved Sony Bravia TV, now will not turn on at all

The warranty on this set should be for 1 year. Return it for warranty service. Unless the set was dropped, moving it should not have effected anything. DO NOT open the set sas that would void the warranty.

Zenith Problem

It would help to know what the initial symptoms were. Or did the set just die with the result as you posted? In any case, first go over all of the boards and resolder any connections that appear grainy or have rings. That is the best way to start. Check the set after that to see if there were any changes. That should eliminate any bad connections as a problem. Next look for any burned or charred areas. Those are the areas where components can change values and cause problems.
Let us kow what you find so far.

Vertical Lines

Sounds like pixel problems, this could be a bad panel or board inside tv. I would contact manufacturer and see if they have policy with bad pixel panel. Even with out of warranty try anyways.

If you have audio but no on screen display, then the problem is likely in the Video Drive Board.
