The A7V8X-LA motherboard only supports SATA1. Your new hard drive is likely SATA2 (SATA-II). You'll likely need to change jumpers on the drive to make it compatible with SATA1.

It's a tiny bit slower than SATA2 (okay, twice as slow). But, it's still faster than PATA (IDE).

Well I went to ASUS website and I could find A7V8X-LA specifically. I was attempting to pull up A7V8X and ASUS informed me that the site was down for maintenance.

There are four A7V8X boards listed. None of them have an LA at the end of it. It's possible ASUS built the board for HP and you will have to get in touch with HP to get support for it.

Check your AHCI (or ACHI, can't remember) settings in your BIOS. Turn them off, use "standard pata mode" even though you're using a SATA drive, and try again.

ASUS K8S-MX Motherboard, but when I connect IDE

How were the partitions created on the SATA? Are they RAID configured from the other system? Does the new motherboard have the same support for your HD as the other system? Check the setup in the BIOS screen on both systems to make them identical as much as you can. According to Tom's Hardware: "In the SATA port configuration place you have up to four "mode" choices: IDE (or PATA) Emulation, native SATA, AHCI, or RAID." Check this section. WHATS THE HARD DRIVE LIMIT OF A COMPAQ PRESARIO SR1315CL

The motherboard of your computer has two IDE and two SATA connections.
There is no upper limit of the drive size (at least nothing you have to worry about if you have WInXP, Vista or Linux installed)

Attention!!! - I heard from many people that HP (Compaq) has disabled the SATA connectors on your motherboard (ASUS A7V8X-LA)!!!
If you want to be on the safe side (and I would definitely recommend that) go and get an IDE drive. There are many good drives around with 500GB of storage.

If you have any more questions, just come back here and leave a comment - I'm happy to help.

This problem arises due to a missing driver in windows installation. download your specific driver and copy it to a floppy drive. Then start the windows setup. As the setup loads it will ask "Press F6 to load a SATA RAID driver".Press F6 and insert the floppy into Floppy disk drive.
And continue the setup...

ASUS A*S-X not recognizing cpu

you should be able to press F2 or Del on boot up to get into the bios, but you should replace the battery first then set everything up as the cmos has obviously lost it's saved settings because the battery is flat.
