Here is the long answer with everything we learned while using a power washer twice a week for years::

It sounds like could be one of the problems listed below or a combination of those things.
1) The exhaust is partially blocked. Check the screen covering exhaust port for carbon and dirt build-up. High-speed exhaust air must pass freely. We finally broke the exhaust screen out with a screwdriver to get our machine going one day.
2) Gas is not flowing freely to carburetor > under gas tank, find the rubber hose connected to carburetor. Pull off rubber hose and make sure gas flows freely. You can use this hose to drain gas tank of old gas ... and then put in fresh gas.
3) Carburetor is partially gummed up and engine cuts off when gas flow slows down. Buy some gum out, and then don't store power washer with gasoline in the tank. Or put additive in gas when storing machine.
4) The choke is letting in too much gas or not enough gas. Try different adjustments. The choke-lever on our power washer got so bad that we could not set throttle at full open or the machine would die. We still use the machine at 2/3 throttle, and then start it each time using WD-40 as described below.
5) Dirty air filter that won't let engine breath enough air to keep up with combustion. Take off air filter and see if problem persists.
6) The spark coil is going bad?? Change spark plug to see if problem persists. Is spark plug wire pushed all the way onto the spark plug?

Now the nitty gritty: we're gonna start that thing right now
7) Take off air filter. Spray WD-40 directly into carburetor. Yes, we use WD-40 every time to start my power washer, and we use the washer twice a week.
Spray in the WD-40, Pull the engine cord. The engine will fire on WD-40. Guaranteed.
Once it starts, keep spraying WD-40 directly into carburetor to keep engine going.
If engine will not fire and keep going on WD-40, then your spark is suspect.
If your engine fires and runs on WD-40 but dies without it, then your gas supply or carburetor are suspect
8) Carburetor problem >>> try Gum out >>> and then take machine to small engine repair shop
9) Spark ... take out spark plug. Put spark wire back on. Hold spark plug by spark wire. Touch metal threads of spark plug to metal opening where plug came out. Metal to metal. Pull back start cord and look for spark between the metal.
If you have no spark, then spark coil is bad >>> take machine to small engine repair shop

Craftsman electric start snowblower wont start

That's refreshing! You've already done a lot of the work!
First, try regapping it at about .040, see if it starts there. If not, check compression.

Does it generate any spark at all? Try it with a screwdriver instead of the spark plug. If none, track back to the magneto - also check any shutoff wiring at the magneto.

Um... you DID put fresh gas INTO it, right? 8) If you take the bowl off temporarily, does gasoline drain freely from the bottom of the carburetor?

Wont stay running

You might have water or dirt in your carb. Sometimes its the fuel can that is the problem. Your mower is new...but your gas can is old!

The first thing I would suggest doing is find the carb and remove the bowl located underneath it. Unplug spark plug for safety too!

Let a little fuel leak out of the carb with the bowl off to clean the fuel line coming into the carb. It may just a have a little dirt or rust blocking it. You can raise and lower the float on the carb to see if it moves freely and fuel stops and starts like it should, raising the float should stop flow an letting it hang down should start the flow.

If fuel flows freely then put the bowl back on, wipe up any spilled or pooled gas, and reconnect the spark plug. See if this clears things up.

If draining the carb bowl works you should go back and inspect the gas can and your mowers fuel tank for contamination. Chances are you have a layer of water down in the fuel tank and gas can. Empty the mowers gas back into the gas can and dispose of this fuel at a gas station that recycles waste fuel and oil. I would also suggest buying a nice new gas can if you old one is rusty, cracked or missing the proper vent caps that keep gas from getting all loaded up with moisture and dirt.

Good luck and be careful!

JD LA140 quit running all of a sudden. It was directly after I added older gas to it as the tank was almost empty. It won't even almost crank as if it isn't getting fire. However, the plugs are firing...

First thing. Dump the fuel! Pull the fuel line ahead of the fuel filter and drain it all off! Old fuel is sometimes accompanied by a lot of water. Especially if stored without proper container closure.

Next, drain the carb bowl. The carb bowl should have either a drain screw in it or the bottom of the bowl has a hex head fitting to allow the entire bowl to be removed. Take off the bowl and get rid all the fuel inside it. Look for water droplets that sit under the fuel on the the metal surface after the fuel has been poured off. If you have the bottom hex fitting type carb look at the barrel of this fitting. That is where you main jet is! You can use a fine piece of metal wire strand and clean out this jet. The holes are generally on the side *(if the jet has a bottom adjustment screw built in than it also has a hole in the center. Run the piece of wire through where you see dark spots and see if they clear out. Look through the jet and see if your handywork is allowing light through. *(yes? than you found a blocked jet and just cleaned it!

Now, put the bowl back on. reconnect the fuel line and put some fresh fuel in it. You might want to recharge the starter battery since you have probably cranked the battery down from all of this.

You can check for spark by getting another spark plug and using it as a tester. Leave the engine plug in place and just lay the tip of the plug on something meta/grounded and see if there is spark while cranking.
If you find spark this rules out a bad ignition system. Put the spark plug boot back on the plug on the motor and start it up!

If you can take off the air filter and look into the carb you might want to try putting a little bit of clean gas right into the carb opening. This will help prime the motor and perhaps get it running enough to eject the remaining water inside the intricate spaces in the carb.

Be careful and good luck.

Dirt bike turn over but wont stay running

ALWAYS have a fire extinguisher on hand when working on carburetors.
Remove the water trap bowl at the bottom of the petcock, (gas valve). Is there any water or trash in the bowl? Drain a cup of gas from the tank. Is there any water or trash in the cup? Dump it, clean it and re-mount it, ( not all bikes have a water trap bowl ). Fill the tank and use only premium gas.

Drain the carburetor. There should be a screw on the lower side or bottom of the carb float bowl. Remove the screw then replace it after the fuel drains. Turn the gas back on and wait a minute for the carb to fill with gas. Install a new stock NGK spark plug and try to start the engine. If the bike doesn't start and run properly then shut off the gas and remove the carburetor from the engine.

Remove the float bowl and clean the entire carb with a spray carb cleaner from the auto parts store. Wear protective goggles to avoid getting spray in your eyes. Spray into all the little airways and fittings in the carb. Remove the idle screw and the air screw on the outside throat of the
carb and spray into the screw holes as well.

Be sure to put these two screws back in the same hole they came out of. IMPORTANT > do not tighten these two adjusters down. Only screw these in until they LIGHTLY seat. Now turn each adjuster one and one half turns outward. Put the rest of the

Wont start after 6 mos. I changed the spark plug, drained & added fresh gas, checked the fuel filter... Kicks over fine. Ran for 4 seconds, then it died. Always ran & started great before.

With a new plug and fresh gas it should start. Check to make sure there isn't a kill switch turned off or that the gas petcock from the tank to the carb is on.

How did you check the fuel filter? Disconnecting it from the fuel line that goes to the carb is the best way, making sure the gas is turned on under the tank. Bleed off a little gas into a can or something just to make sure the filter isn't plugged.

The last thing I'd do is take off the air filter and spray a little starting fluid in the carb. It may start and run several times if there is old gas in there somewhere. Remember the bowl on the carb is probably still full of old gas. After some fresh fuel reaches the plug it should start and continue to run.

(You might drain the bowl on the carb of ols gas before you go any further)

Good luck!

Tecumseh 9hp craftsman snowblower will not stay running

First take the carb off of the engine and then remove the bowl, carefully take the float off paying special attention to the needle and how it is attached to the float. Next, lightly blow air into the fuel inlet while holding your finger over the spot where the needle goes in. Use a bread tie with the paper scraped off. Stick the wire through the pick up tube at the bottom of the carb. Find any other holes and probe those holes with the wire. Then thoroughly wash the entire carb with carb cleaner then blow the whole carb off. Then put the float and needle back in making sure that when putting the bowl back on that it seats tightly all the way around the rubber gasket. Also, just before you put the bowl on turn the carb upside down to see if the float is sitting level. If it is put the bowl on, If not then the spot where the needle sits on the float has to be bent one way or the other just a little until the float sits level. After the bowl is put in place, the nut that holds the bowl on the threaded area should have two possibly three holes plus the hole down the center, probe all holes with the wire. put everything back on the motor and try again. If it still won't run then you will need a carb kit.
