Question about Acer Aspire 5100 Notebook

Laptop Overheating My laptop (Acer Aspire 5100-3357) which I bought just less than a year ago started overheating a few months ago. I didn't know why every time I left it on it was off when I came back, and then one time I was there when it happened. It seems to only happen when the screen is closed, but it will be running fine and then suddenly make a strange beep and shut off. It can't be turned back on for an hour or so, (I assume because it has to cool off?) I keep it on a cooling rack with a fan running under it at all times, and it has always lived in a cold air conditioned basement. Is this a known problem with the Acer's and is there any warrenty that would cover this sort of problem? I have read how-to's on taking apart your computer, and blowing it out with air but I don't feel comfortable taking it apart myself. It has also started to be much slower and the video card might not be working correctly, I get a lot of jumping and skipping in visuals and it locks up if certain programs run such as windows media player.

I am not sure which you are talking about either. But I will venture to say that I had a similar problem once where setup would not complete on my system either. I initially thought that I had a bad or dirty disc but later after running a few tests, I found out that my HDD was full of bad sectors. Thus I ended up replacing the HDD and all is well. I would try running a stand alone formatting software or you could try doing a complete format vs. a quick format during Windows setup. If setup still won't complete after a complete format then run a surface scan or a HDD regenertion program to verify the integrity of the drive. This will tell you if you have a bad drive or not.

First try taking off the bottom access panels, and make sure there isn't a large amount of dust/hair that could be preventing it from cooling properly. If everything's clean, you should call Acer ASAP to use your warranty before it expires, as it is probably a hardware problem that isn't user fixable.

Sounds like there is dust where the cpu fan is and its blocking the ventilation path in the laptop. If you can take apart the laptop to expose the fan, I would make sure the fan is free of debris. Clogged CPU fans will cause the laptop to overheat cause the air has nowhere to go.

If you do that and the laptop is still overheating then the motherboard is going bad unless your not using the correct charger for it. If you use a charger that puts out more voltage then whats needed then that could cause the laptop to overheat so you might need a new charger.

Acer Aspire 4315, making noise near fan

You would need to open it, has the laptop been dropped? This is the only way I know that could cause this problem. I suggest you fix this problem because it will cause overheating of you chips, that will eventually cause failure. Opening a laptop is not for novice, unless you trust yourself you can do it, have it done in a shop that fixes laptops. Some electronic shop can do this for you at a resonable price.
