GATEWAY 310 THE WELCOME TO WINDOWS SCREEN APEARS AND THEN OWNER SIGN ON SHOWS AND WHEN I PRESS OWNER BOX A "RED X BOX" APEARS AND A "YES / NO" SET OF BUTTONS INSIDE OF THIS BOX AND WHEN EITHER OF THEM ARE PRESSED IT SIGNS OFF THE OWNER BLOCK. FLUSTRATED

    tried what ya' said and changed the way ya log onto windows to "username password" and i don,t have either but username comes up automatically with "owner" in the blank but darned if i can think of a password for it. Thanx, really flustrated, gonna toss computer in the street unless ya can come up with something.

I wonder if that is a computer virus.

Try putting the computer into safe mode by shutting the computer down, wait 30 seconds, turn if back on.

At the beginning of the boot press and hold down the f8 button. Use the up and down arrow keys to select safe mode and press enter.

After windows finishes starting up in safe mode, restart your computer the normal way.

If the login screen still appears that way and you can get into safe mode, I can tell you how to go into the control panel and change the login screen to the other mode. That should work then.

XP and Vista Normal Mode Start your computer as you normally would. Click the "My Computer" icon on your desktop. Go to "C:\ Program Files\Sony\Setting Utility Series." Find and choose the "VCCPointingDevice" folder in the "Setting Utilities Series folder" to open the "Built-in Pointing Device" dialog box. Locate the "Enable" box on the "Built-in Pointing Device" dialog box. Check the box to enable the Vaio touchpad if you wish to use this device. Disable the touchpad if it is interfering with the external mouse. Uncheck the "Enable" box if you have a USB (PS/2) mouse connecting to your Vaio and wish to use that instead of the built-in touchpad. Pick "Yes, I'm Sure" when prompted to activate your choice, then close all the windows. Windows 7 Normal Mode Launch Windows as usual. How do I reset it to factory?


Click "Start" on your Windows desktop. Navigate through "All Programs" and "Gateway." Click on "Gateway Recovery Management."



Click "Restore" when the Gateway Recovery Management window pops up, which will take the system back to the default factory specifications.

A box will pop up asking for confirmation, click "Yes" and then "Start." You may have to enter a password as well, but only if your particular Gateway had a password set.



Wait for the computer to restart. A "Restore from factory default" box will appear, requiring you to click "Next" twice in a row. Click "OK" in the box that appears next, and wait for the hard drive partition to be created.

The factory default installation will then be moved over to the hard drive.



Click "OK" in the box that appears and wait for a second Gateway restart.

Several minutes will pass as Windows "starts for the first time."

When restarting finally finishes, a "Set Up Windows" dialog box will appear. Click "Next," followed by checking the license agreement box, and then "Next" again.



Enter a user name and picture, if desired, and a computer name. Also, customize the background wallpaper for your desktop, optionally. Click "Next."



Click "Use Recommended Settings" on the Protect Windows-based dialog box that pops up.



Set your correct date and time settings in the next box. Select your location in the following screen. Click "Next," followed by "Start" to finish.



Wait while Windows checks for your individual Gateway computer specifications and adjusts accordingly.

This will likely take several minutes, so leaving your computer for a short time is fine.

Windows will then prepare your hardware and finish your Gateway restoration process, including the installation of Gateway Recovery Management.

Once completed, your Gateway is good to go and ready at factory settings.

My gateway notebook is locked n I can't remember my user password ..help very frustrated ...I tried ctrl alt del twice to make the admin acct pop up but nothing


Try booting in safe mode.

Restart your computer.

As the computer restarts, begin pressing the F8 key after the Gateway BIOS logo appears until the Windows Advanced Options Menu screen appears.

On the Windows Advanced Options Menu screen, use the arrow keys to select Safe Mode, and then press the ENTER key.

After logging on to Windows XP Safe mode, in the Desktop dialog box, click Yes.

After changing my motherboard, the Dell no longer recognized the CDDVD RW drive. In fact, it now shows up as a floppy disk drive. I flashed the BIOS and that did not help.

Please follow the steps below to resolve the issue if you are not comfortable doing this then just take help from any friend or neighbour if this did not resolve the issue then replace the drive asap because it is a hardware issue.


1. Press Windows Key+R and type regedit in the text box and click OK

2. Click "File" in the menu.

3. Click "Export" from the drop-down menu.

4. Click the down arrow beside "Save In" and select Local Disk

5. Type Backup.reg in the File Name field.

6. Click Save.

CD/DVD drivers reinstall:

Press the Windows Key + R and type devmgmt.msc and press enter.

Device manager will open up.

Click the + sign beside DVD/CD Drives.

Right Click on the device listed under it and select Uninstall

Restart the PC and let the driver install automatically.

Check the issue once again.

you may have to get access thru ethernet or dial up until all updates have been installed thru windows. After all updates try the network card again.

If you set the password for windows please try the steps
below if it is bios password you need to contact your
computer manufacturer
Reboot your machine.
Press F8 before the Windows boot screen appears.
You will be be prompted with a boot options menu.
Select the Start Windows in Safe Mode option.
Click through several self-explanatory screens until your
reach the familiar 'Welcome' screen.
Note that this welcome screen is limited to 256 colors and
640x480 resolution because the primary graphics will have
been set to the Windows Safe Mode software VGA adapter. You
will not be able to change this mode even in Display options,
while Windows is running in Safe Mode.
Find the icon for the Administrator user. If the default
settings of your system haven't been changed, there should be
no password for this account.
The Safe Mode Welcome screen might display some of the other
users on your system.
Login as the admin.
Press Yes at the prompt asking if you would like to continue
using Safe Mode.
Continue on to the User Settings control panel. Here you can
change any of the other passwords for user on the machine.
Make any changes you want.
Reboot your computer. As long as you don't press any keys
(i.e. F8) during the boot-up the computer will startup
normally.
Login as the user for which you set the password.
