Your machine is set to the announce mode, where it only plays an outgoing announcement without taking any incoming messages. You want to switch it to the record mode, where it will record incoming messages. Since you declined to specify the model of your VTech system, I can't tell you how to switch it. I can only direct you to enter the model number into the search box here to download a copy of the manual.

Well, your machine might be broken, or you haven't set the little switch on the unit to ANS. The switch is on the side of the machine where the cables come out. But here are the instructions from the manual:

Recording Outgoing Messages:

Your answering machine has a built-in outgoing message, "Hello, please leave a message after the tone." You can use this message or record your own.

1. Hold the ANNC/DAY/<<, and speak clearly into the microphone, no more than 10 inches away.

2. Release the ANNC/DAY/<< when you finish. Your answering machine beeps and automatically plays back your recorded message.

*Your outgoing message must be between one and 60 seconds.

*If you record your won message but wish to revert to the pre-recorded message, press DELETE during playback of your outgoing message.

SOURCE: Answering Machine not recording!

The reason the answering machine doesn't work is because it is not DSL compatible! If you have DSL internet for your computer, the phone lines are not compatible with the answering machine!

SOURCE: Power failure message.

Power Failure Recovery

If the system is disconnected from the AC power it will not operate. Your announcemen and messages are retained in memory during a power failure but you will need to reset the clock. See the instructions on the bottom of the unit. If the message window displays CL, you need to reset the clock. See the instruction on the bottom of the unit.

Vtech 5.8 digital spread spectrum answering machine the machine will not record a answer, it is flasing between a cl and a on the display

Your machine is set to Announce Only, where it announces you're not available but does not allow the caller to leave a message. To allow the caller to leave a message, switch your machine to Answer. I wish I could tell you exactly how to do that, but since you neglected to specify the model of your VTech 5.8GHz system I can only suggest you enter it into the search box at http://www.vtechphones.com/support/general/manuals to download a copy of the manual.

When simeone calls, it won't record their message

This was a new phone I was using,& didn't realize I had voice mail on it. When it rang 2 times, it recorded the message before I answered on the 3rd. or 4th ring, giving me a dial tone. It is all fixed now.

Thank you

Says machine is full, but there are no messages on the machine

make sure you retrieve all messages . I mean you may have 0 new messages, but you have lots of old messages ,it may full too.
Otherwise, delete all message, try to record incoming message or record your personal greating. Make sure the record function work, record chip works as well.

Avoiding the greeting message

Why not record a 1 second of silence instead of the standard greetings and have them "jump" straight to leaving a message.
