If you know a, b, or c, you can figure out angle A. The sin(A) = a/h. To figure out what A is, you would use the arcsin(A). Angle B is the complementary of A so B = 90- A.

For example if a = 4, b = 3 and c = 5.

Sin(A) = 4/5 = 0.8

Arcsin(0.8) = 53.13 degrees

B = 90 - 53.13 = 36.87 degrees

Hope this helps you.

In my example, I made a mistake, it should read

    a = 4, b = 3 and h = 5.

Hi - welcome to Fixya.

You're refering to Trigonometry or 'Trig'. The basic formula is easily remembered as SOH-CAH-TOA:

SOH: Sine of an angle is Opposite over Hypotenuse **
CAH: Cosine of an angle is Adjacent over Hypotenuse **
TOA: Tangent of an angle is Opposite over Adjacent **

** See attached image below

I can't tell you which buttons to press on your calculator, but you can download a new manual from here:

http://www.retrevo.com/support/TI-TI-30Xa-Calculators-manual/id/421ci270/t/2/

The download page will open in a new Browser window. Scroll down a little and click on "Download the Manual". On the next page, scroll to the bottom and enter the 5-digit security code in the box then click "Download" now. You can then save the file to your PC and/or print it for future reference. You don't need to enter your email address to download the manual. If you can't open the manual you may also need to download the latest version of Adobe Reader:

http://get.adobe.com/reader/

If you have any trouble downloading the instruction manual or you have any further maths questions, please post back and I will be happy to assist you.

Regards,
BElectric.

It appears that you didn't read both of my messages or you would have noticed that the formula was provided for you further down the page. Regards, BElectric

What is the length of a hypotonuse triangle with legs being 4 and 3

a^2 + b^2 = c^2
a squared + b squared = c squared, where c is the length of the hypotenuse, and a and b are the lengths of the other two sides in a right-angled triangle.

For a 10ft radius octagon, how long should each side be?

There is probably a formula for this or other ways of doing this, but I will give it a shot.

An octagon has 8 sides (octopus has 8 legs). To make an octagon, we effectively have 8 triangles joined at the centre. In the centre, we have 8 equal angles. Since a full circle is 360 degrees, each of these angles must be 360 / 8 or 45 degrees.

Now we can just focus on one of these triangles. We have an angle of 45 degrees at the centre and two arms extending out 10 feet.

At this point, we can use the cosine law to calculate the length of the side or we can recognize that it is an isosceles triangle and work out the other angles and determine the length of the side.

Using Cosine Law, a^2= b^2 + c^2 - 2xbxc Cos A
In this case, A = 45 degrees, b = 10 feet, c=10 feet.

Good luck.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Paul

Finding the area of a triangle in the coordinate Plane

I find the easiest way to solve these is to sketch them first (I'm a visual learner;) We get a nice right-angled triangle, with the right-angle at B. The formula for the area of a triangle is 1/2 * base* height or (base * height)/2.

We can use BC or AB as the base.

If we use BC as the base, the length is 9-4 or 5. The height is 6-2 or 4.

We can now but the base and the height in the formula to figure out the area.

Good luck.

Finding area of a Triangle in the Coordinate Plane

The area of a triangle is 1/2 times base times height. A sketch of the triangle in the coordinate plane will determine how easy or hard this will be to be. From the sketch, you will see that this is a right-angled triangle with B being the right-angle. This makes it easier because we can easily determine the base and the height to use in the formula.

We can chose AB or BC to be the base, while the other will be the height. If we choose the base of AB, its length is 4, the 6 - 2. The height is 9-(-4) or 13.

We can now put the length and height into the formula to calculate the area of the triangle.

Good luck.

Formula to calculate hyportenuse

The formula to calculate the hypotenuse of a right angled triangle is a^2 + b^2 = c^2 or in words, a squared plus b squared is equal to c squared. The most common mistake is that students make the hypotenuse a squared or b squared. The hypotenuse has to be c squared. Thus, when figuring out the sides of a right-angled triangle, always make sure the hypotenuse is the longest side.

For example, a triangle with sides of length 3 and 4, calculate the hypotenuse. Let a be 3 and b be 4. 3^2 + 4^2 = c^2 or 9+16 = c^2, or 25 = c^2. Now take the square root of both sides and we get c = 5.

How can you classify a triangle according to it angle? is there a formula for it

Well, there is classification by sides, equilateral with 3 equal sides, Isosceles with two equal sides, and scalene with no equal sides, but you talk about angles, but I wanted to point out equilaterals have 3 equal angles, isoceles have 2 equal angles and scalene have no equal angles.
So, now we talk about angles: a Right trianlge has one angle that is 90 degrees, an Obtuse triangle has one angle greater than 90 degrees, and an Acute has no angles over 90 degrees.
Thus, it is possible to have a (scalene or isoceles) AND (acute, obtuse, or right) triangle, but never an equilateral AND (obtuse or right). The angles can't be equal and 90+ degrees if all three must equal 180 degrees.
