I would first unplug the unit and remove the top cover. There are 3 screws towards the back of it. Push the cover back towards the wall and pull off. To the left you will see a control panel (usually black metal case), remove the 3 screws and flip over so you can see the control. Make sure there are no loose connections. I have ran into quite a few that had relay connection wires loose. If everything is ok. The next thing you would want to do is remove the front lower access panel (kick plat panel) and blower chamber. There is a thermal fuse and a thermistor located behind it. If you have a meter then take the proper continuity tests that are displayed on schematic. Both the thermal fuse and thermistor are fairly cheap. Thermal fuse blown....likely causes????

The thermal fuse trips out when it builds up too much heat. That is caused by the vent being restricted. Clean out the vent the lent trap and any lint build up in the machine. Hopefully this will fix you problem.

Hello & Welcome to FixYa

If you have already cleaned the vent then the problem is with the Thermal fuse. When the thermal fuse goes bad it cannot be reset and replacing it is recommended repair. It is located on the blower wheel housing inside the rear panel to the exhaust duct. You can test it for continuity before replacing. Please get back to me if you have any other questions.

The problem is usually caused by a blown thermal fuse. Disconnect power then access and bypass the thermal fuse on the blower housing. The blower housing is located on the rear left bottom.

Bypass the thermal fuse by disconnecting the wires and connecting them together. Insulate them properly and plug the dryer back in. The thermal fuse is indeed blown and needs to be replaced if the dryer starts. Do not use the dryer with the thermal fuse bypassed due to fire hazards.

Our dryer is overheating, after 20 25 minutes then we smell a burnt plasticy smell, then we let it cool down, start again, it goes for awhile, then stops, then again overheating, then the smell again.

Firstly, you need to stop running your dryer before you do any further damage,

As you haven't specified your brand or model of dryer, I can only give general advice. It's likely that your thermostat has failed in the closed (on) position. The thermostat cuts power to the element when your dryer reaches the correct temperataure.

Most dryers also have a thermal fuse to cut all power to the dryer if they overheat. This functions as a backup safety device and this only usually trips when the thermostat fails. Your dryer is stopping because the thermal fuse is cutting power, but as you can smell burnt plastic, it's likely some damage is being done before the thermal fuse trips.

Stop using the dryer, and check/replace your thermostat.

Please rate this solution if you find it helpful. Thanks!

Whirlpool dryer wont start

Check the door switch actuator (the piece sticking down that the door actuates when closing . Could have broken off . If there , and you hear a click , then thermal fus (white piece with 2 wires attached ) could be problem . Disconnect power and put the 2 wires togather. Reconnect power and see if dryer starts . I have never had to replace a push-to-start switch .

Dryer clicks when start button pushed but does not start.

A quarter was lodged on the thermal fuse , located below the lint screen on the blower exhaust housing, on our dryer. Remove the front lower panel , 2 screw, and you'll see 2 fuses. I suspect that our control board is burnt.

Kenmore electric dryer won't start. #63841

IF THERE IS A RESTRICTION IN THE EXHAUST(LINT BUILDUP OR FOLDED FLEX ATTACHED TO THE DRYER AND PUSHED UP AGAINST THE WALL) THE DRYER WILL NOT DRY PROPERLY. IF THE PROBLEM IS NOT FIXED, A THERMAL FUSE WILL OPEN SHUTTING DOWN THE CIRCUIT TO THE MAIN MOTOR. THE THERMAL FUSE IS A SMALL WHITE OBJECT LOCATED BEHIND THE BACK PANEL DOWN BY THE EXHAUST OUTLET. THERE ARE TWO WIRES ATTACHED TO IT. IF IT IS BAD, REPLACE IT AND CHECK THE DUCT WORK FOR ANY RESTRICTIONS.
