Question about Dell Latitude Cp, Cpi, Cpx, C600, C800, Inspiron 3800 8000 4000 601212 CD-ROM Drive

1 Answer

Dell Latitude CPi/Windows 2000 Pro

When I start up the computer I have a blue screen that reads:

***STOP: then some numbers, INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE

It says to try to reboot first - done, still receive the same message. Then it says if this doesn't work to remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers - none were installed. it says to run a chkdsk - can't because it is stuck on this blue screen with instructions. It doesn't even have the blinking icon so you can type something on it.

Please advice if you can.

Sounds like your hard drive is not performing to specs. is this a new device, or something older?

How do you run CHKDSK /F with the blue screen stop error on my desktop?

You MUST have a boot device like CD, DVD, or USB. Use the install disc to access command prompt, by choosing the repair option. You could also download and burn a boot CD like Hirens.

The other option is to remove the drive and attach it as a slave or USB to another computer.

When you first start your computer how do get it to read the disc first?

You go into Boot Menu, and set the - first boot device to CDROM.
The computer will then read what is in the optical drive, first.

Computer off, press the Power On button. Watch closely for the blue dell logo.
Looking at the bottom of the monitor screen when the blue Dell logo comes up, you will see - F2 = Setup.
At the top right of the screen you will see F12 = Boot Menu.

This screen goes by F-A-S-T!
As SOON as you see the blue Dell logo press the F12 key.

If you miss this small window of opportunity, just wait for Windows to fully load, then click on Start, Turn Off Computer, and Restart.

If Windows is not loading, then press the CTRL, ALT, and DELete keys at the SAME TIME. (Not shouting)
This will restart your computer so you can try again.

Upon entering Boot Menu you cannot use your mouse anymore, you have to use the keyboard.

The Boot Device Menu has the devices listed, and each device has a number next to it.

At the bottom of the menu, type the number that is next to CDROM, then press the Enter key.

Screen has stop inaccessiable boot device on it

If you are running windows, Insert your windows cd and set computer to start from cd. When prompted to, hit a key to boot from CD. Let Windows start the install (relax it is not really installing anything) when it gets to the prompt tell it you want to Repair an existing installation. Then pick the prompt that gets you the recovery console. When you get to the prompt type CHKDSK /R and let it run. Sometimes this can take an hour or more depending on the size of your drive. Do not get worried if the percentages complete go backwards, like from 70% back to 50%. Sometimes it will go back and fix files. Hopefully you will not get the error that there are unrecoverable errors. This has worked for me on about 90% of the hard drives that I received the inaccessible boot device.
