Each time I try installing Windows Xp on my Acer Extensa 4220 I receive an error message "hard disk not detected". However, Windows Vista works fine but I have problem with hardware drivers. Also some software that works on Windows XP are not compatible with Windows Vista. I also notice while installing Windows Vista that there is a button that requires me to load driver which I do not have the disk.

Acer Extensa supports two model of HDD installation 1) AHCI and 2) SATA.

Windows Vista get installs on both but for Windows XP you need to Enable SATA option.

For that go into Bios, Change option of Hard Disk from AHCI to SATA. After that you can install both XP as well as Vista.

Try it, and mail me update: ansari.yasser@gmail.com

Download the appropriate winXP SATA HDD driver for extensa 4220 from acer website. Load the files to a usb floppy drive & press F6 when you are prompted to do so, during the first phase of winxp installation.

Hello.. I need some help. I am using toshiba satellite a1O system unit..my laptop was fyn till nw..all of a sudden windows doesnt load..when i turn the power on, the toshiba logo is shown..then black...

Hello
First thing you do is to see what hard disc installed in your laptop. You can check that by checking it in your bios system. To check in your bios system first turn off your computer then press delete while your laptop is booting up. Then you will see if there is a hard disk detected in your lap top if there is a detected hard drive this means you have a problem in your windows installed in your lap top.
There is also a reason why those message appear if the first boot of your laptop is the CD/DVD ROM. Check you CD/DVD ROM if there a CD inside this may the first on to read while the laptop booting up. Remove the cd inside your CD/DVD ROM. Then restart your laptop. Check your hard disk connector it may have some loose contact thats why your laptop did not recognize the hard disc.
Hope this can help keep on touch with fixya. Hope to hear some testimonial from you. . .

..how to dual boot a Hard disk drive in windows 7.

Step 1: Create/Obtain an Installation Disc Yes, we're all aware most motherboards these days allow you to boot from a USB flash drive, but setting that up is a guide in itself. We're going to assume that you either already have a Windows 7 DVD, or have an ISO file. If the former is true, feel free to skip ahead to Step 2.
To create a Windows 7 disc, pop a blank DVD into your burner, and burn it as an image file with any of the countless apps that can handle ISOs. Our personal favorite is ImgBurn, but to name some others: Burn4Free CD and DVD, CDBurnerXP and Ashampoo Burning Studio Free.
Step 2: Create a New Partition Editor's note: Before continuing I'd like to take a moment to acknowledge the fact that data corruption is a possibility. Even though this guide is absolutely harmless, random software anomalies can and do occur - do yourself a favor and backup your precious data before proceeding. Moving on to more pressing matters, we will need to create unallocated disk space by resizing an existing partition in your current hard drive, and then create a new partition on that free space for Windows 7 to run on. Most of you who are reading this will probably only have one existing partition, dedicated to the operating system you're currently using.
With that in mind, to help you in the process of creating a new partition we'll be looking at two separate approaches. While Windows Vista has built-in utilities to resize active partitions, XP does not, and thus we must resort to using a third party application (GParted).

Create a New Partition on Windows Vista If you are currently running Windows Vista as your primary operating system, we can use its built-in tools to modify your hard drive partitions. You can also use a third-party tool called GParted, which we are recommending to Windows XP users (see below). You can skip to the XP section and follow the exact same directions if you prefer the GParted route for any reason. On Windows Vista, click Start and enter "diskmgmt.msc" into the search bar. A window titled "Disk Management" should open displaying basic information about the drives attached to your PC.
Right click the partition on "Disk 0" and select "Shrink Volume".

How can i format my laptop

Ensure that the hard disk is installed properly in the laptop. The drive cannot be formatted before it is installed, or if it's not installed correctly.

Step 2

Gather the required software. The type of media will depend on the hardware in your laptop. Older computers without a CD-ROM drive, will require the use of the operating system floppy disks. Laptops that can run Windows XP require the installation CD and product key. Older versions of Windows also have disk-formatting capability in the installation process, and the installation media is either a CD or floppy disk.

Step 3

Place the installation disk or manufacturer software in the drive and then boot the computer. Early in the installation process, the Windows installer has a step that will detect any installed hard disks and allow for them to be formatted. The software from the disk manufacturer will also detect the hard disk and give you the option to format the drive.

Step 4

Determine which file system is to be used. Windows XP will either work on a NTFS file system or an older VFAT file system. Choose the desired file system when prompted.

Step 5

Decide whether the whole disk should be formatted or if the disk will be partitioned and each partition to be formatted separately. The Windows installer includes a menu-driven utility that will create hard disk partitions before formatting. If the hard disk is being formatted to replace an existing Windows installation, delete the existing partitions and re-create them.

Step 6

Format the hard disk with the Windows installer when prompted. The Windows installer will let you know when it is time to format the disk and ask for confirmation.

This fault usually means the hard disk has failed or the disk controller, in most cases it is the hard disk that has failed.
Check the BIOS settings and see if the hard disk is detected, if not it is probably a faulty hard disk.
When you boot up the computer does the hard disk LED light flash and can you hear the hard disk spin up. If the hard disk is making a clicking noise then it is definitely faulty.
To test the hard disk another way, remove the hard disk and connect it to an USB hard disk adapter and connect it to a working computer's USB port. If this computer cannot detect this as an external hard drive and you can't open the folders and files, this confirms it as faulty.
To get the computer operational again, you need a new hard drive, Install Windows on the new hard drive with the computer's device drivers and your programs.

No boot sector on hard disk - No bootable devices - strike F1 to

AFAIK all XP disks were bootable so maybe check your bios options.
If they are correct and it still does not boot them goto bootdisk.com and download the floppy setup disks for XP. You could then set your laptop to boot from floppy and install xp from there.
