Question about Kenmore Drop-In Bobbin 505S-21BH Mechanical Sewing Machine

Kenmore sewing machine # 385.17626 feed dogs not advancing fabric. Appear to move up and down, but not forward to back.

I had already done an extensive job cleaning lots of lint out of the bobbin area, oiled the machine, but to no avail, the feed dogs still only go up and down not back and forth pulling the fabric through like it should. :-(

Any other suggestion? I suppose I will have to take it to a shop for repairs.

    Thanks anyway!

I had the same problem and had recently posted my own message, with no replies. Took it to a repair person and he fixed it at no cost - it was stuck in reverse because the mechanism(s) were all gunked up. Take off the accessory box on the machine and the bottom plate. move the mechanism so they move freely and take out any gunk you see. The feeder dogs should now move back & forth in addition to up & down, feeding the material properly

Check your stitch length regulator is not set on zero.

Remove the needleplate and clean out any lint from between teeth of feeddogs......while you are at it, clean around the bobbin area and remove any lint under bobbin case.

It will have something to do with your stitch length regulator.....when you adjust from Zero and watch the feeddogs, you should see them move as the number increases even when not sewing.......I have known many old Singers whose feeddogs move back and forth but do not rise......broken gears the cause, but as to the opposite scenario, without looking at it, very difficult to diagnose.

As to the idea of oiling sewing machines............on these pages are literally litres of stories of machines playing up and folk "oiling" them...........it is NOT a cure all, and a very little occasionally at the junctions of the moving parts (mostly inside the casing and unseen by users) is all that is necessary, ........so proactive rather than reactive.

A regular service by a qualified technician every couple of years (more often if frequently used or quilting) will ident potential problems and keep things moving smoothly.......we all take our cars to be serviced fairly regularly..these machines need the same attention to work well for years.

Why when I sew the fabrics not advance even if the claws are raised and the machine does not stop sewing. I have to close the switch

With the issues you are experiencing, it may be wise to take it for service.

Even though the feed dogs are raised, are they actually moving forward and back as you stitch (remove the thread, raise the presser foot, rotate the handwheel, and watch the feed dog action)? Check that the stitch length is set long enough that the feed dogs will be moving the fabric rather than sewing in place. Another thing to check is whether there is a pressure adjustment for the presser foot. If you are sewing light weight fabric, sometimes the pressure needs to be increased so the feed dogs are able to grab the fabric.

As for the machine running on, it could be a multitude of issues, ie the foot control, electrical... This may be something that a professional should evaluate.

How to move feed dogs under needle for singer 514

First, make sure the feed dogs are in the up position and NOT dropped for darning.

Second, check that the stitch length is set to at least a 2 or 2.5 to make sure the feed dogs will actually move the fabric a noticeable distance. The closer the stitch length is set to zero, the closer together the stitches will be until it will sew only in one place because the fabric will no longer advance.

The feed dogs need to move. They should actually rise, move toward the back of the machine, drop down, move forward to the position to again rise--this creates one stitch. If the fabric is not moving, then it is possible that your machine has not been cleaned and oiled recently. Old oil will dry and cause the moving parts to seize.

It was working now it seems to be frozen the needle part wont move

Not feeding material.

Tension generally does not affect the feed unless it is way too tight. Most reasons for fabric not advancing under the presser foot is that the feed dogs have been dropped for darning. If the feed dogs are operating properly, as the handwheel turns the feed dogs should rise above the plate, move toward the back of the machine pulling the fabric, drop down, come forward and rise again.

The other possibility is that the presser foot pressure has been released so the presser foot is not holding the fabric down on the feed dogs. Some machines have a spring-loaded knob on the top of the machine, a dial, or something to adjust the amount of pressure the foot applies. Consult your owner's manual.

if you have a instruction manual for the machine, then check to find out where the feed dog lever is, and check to see if the feed dog is in the up position to sew or in the down position, if the feed dog lever is in the up position and will not feed the fabric, then the machine need to be check to see what's wrong with the feed dogs.

How old is this machine? At zero setting of stitching length the fabric wouldn't move. There may be problem in stitching length mechanism or the fabric feeding mechanism is wornout.

Clothes don't advance when sowing and the stitch is too tight

check the feed dog position,, feed dog has to be up to sew & move the fabric
check the top tension & bring the tension down to a lower number to see which setting is good for the fabric your sewing

My kenmore 385 won't feed fabric

Check to see what pattern is selected. Be sure it isn't the buttonhole.Select straight stitch.Move the stitch length setting to 4.Turn the handwheel and see if the feed dogs move forward. Press the reverse lever and see if they move backwards. Select straight stretch stitch and turn the wheel to see if the feed dogs move forward and backward.Check the presser foot release on top of the machine and make sure there is pressure on the foot.
Sometimes the reverse assembly on this machine stops working because it has the wrong type of grease on it and it turns into a hard gummy mess that won't let it work.
