IBM ThinkPad T40 2373 PC Problem

Thanks for your excellent reply to my post. I did have one quick question for you, though. Shortly before the machine refused to switch on, the USB ports on it failed. Basically the entire machine would freeze if any USB devices were plugged into it, and it would have to be rebooted.

Now, I really like the T40 and am confident of replacing the motherboard myself, however, the last thing I want to do is to purchase a new motherboard and replace it only to find that it wasn't in fact the motherboard causing the problem.

My question is; given that the USB ports failed before the machine did, do you think that this supports the idea that the motherboard is at fault or does this lead you to suspect some other device is causing my problems?

Usb ports are very simple decices, almost like a wall socket, they rarely fail, and if they do, it's generally a driver problem or the flat plastic pin inside the port has broken. Plus the usb ports are soldered to the board on these models. So, the usb failure you mentioned leads me to believe that that is another indicater that the board was going out. I'm a big fan of IBM, they are very durable machine. They can really take a beating. I cheched out Ebay and there are several T40 series motherboards up for bid. You should be able to get one at a decent price. Keep in mind that any of the T40 series boards will work for you.

Ibm thinkpad t43

IBM has farmed out their Notebook/laptop business to a company named Lenovo. They also have excellent support. I recommend that you follow this link I have provided for you:
Once there on the right side you will find "Auto-Detect" select this, state your specific problem and Lenovo will do all the work. You might have to download some drivers or update your system, but you will be in the right spot. Good Luck

Do you have a formula in Microsoft Excel that a value can convert to a word...(Ex. 15,000 then it will convert to in words fifteen Thousand..)thanks. need immediate reply.

Hi enelrah_mel0,

You can create a function called SpellNumber using the Visual Basic Editor in the Microsoft Excel to spell the number.

  1. Please Open Microsoft Excel. Then press Alt + F11 to open the Visual Basic Editor.
  2. Then, click "Insert" option above the Visual Basic Editor window and select "Module".
  3. Then, in the Book1 Module1 (Code) window, paste the below code there. (pasted in the next post separately for your convenience)
  4. Then, press Alt+Q to close the Visual Basic Editor window.
  5. After that, please type the formula " =SpellNumber( * )" in the Excel Sheet and press the Enter Key.
  6. Then, save the Excel Sheet.
eg: =SpellNumber(A1)

Where A1 is the first cell in the excel sheet.

Good Luck!

Please post back the result and let me know if you require further assistance.

Thanks for using Fixya.

Need help getting pass the blue screen

Here, here, here and here are some excellent resources that will help you to troubleshoot the stop error codes (blue screens). If you reply with the exact code # you are getting, we can give you more detailed help, but you should be able to run chkdsk from the recovery console (if you have it installed, it would appear as a boot option (breifly) when you boot your system, or by pressing F8 as it boots up. For more info about recovery console see here and here. You can also run chkdsk from an installation cd if you boot the system from the install or recovery disc instead of the hard drive. See instructions to run chkdsk here and here.

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.
If I've managed to answer your question or solve a problem, please take just a moment to rate this post....thanks!

Ibm t60 will not boot after ibm updates

The problem is sort of solved. I phoned the IBM Support centre; they said that the mother board was either broken or faulty. Fortunately the laptop is still under waranty and so an engineer will come and fix it. I must say the IBM suport centre was very efficient and quick.

There was no mention from them though that it was the bios update that may have caused the problem.

I'll update when the laptop is working.
