LCD on Uniden SC 230 scanner stopped working

The LCD on my Uniden SC 230 stopped working. It powers on with AC adapter and batteries. With NiMH batteries there is a brief display, but it instantly fades to a blank screen. When attached to the adapter, there is no display at all. The scanner makes noises when it powers up and I can hear the hiss of the radio. It worked fine less than a month ago.
