You may have to go into your laptop's BIOS setting and enable boot from CD.

When your pc starts there is usually a brief message tell you to hit a certain key to enter setup. Depending on the type of computer, it could be F2, ESC, DEL or something similar. You have to watch for it when the computer starts. Tab through the various settings until you find Boot Config, Boot Setup or something similar. Do not change any other settings. When you find it set it to boot from the CD Rom first, hard drive second, and floppy third if you have one.
Reboot the pc. There will be a brief message telling you to hit any key to boot from the CD.

HP Pavilion laptop - HDD issue?

very possible a hdd issue
you can get solid state hard drives ( far superior to disc hard drives) for around $90.00 for 125 gb
sshd drives have no moving parts , are much faster in start up and can get more data stored than a disc hard drive
KIngston brand are very reliable and can be got from the net--e-bay
Install one and use the os win 8 disc to install the os into the computer
if you don'y have a disc , you can install from the web and use the activation code you have for the disc
on installing the sshd, you will need to go into bios and change the boot from hhd to cd or external hard drive
that puts the os on to the new sshd and when that iscompleted you can then go back into bios and change to boot from external ( disc) to sshd

You need to re image your hard drive as the OS is now incomplete or corrupt. Try booting from a Vista DVD and choose repair or pressing F8 and choose restore to an earlier time or known good configuration. If that works you will be OK otherwise you need a Vista OS disc and have to install a new version of windows.

My toshiba laptop won't let me do anything it just says no bootable device insert a boot disk

Hi what OS ? (win 7, xp)

have you tried to check the Bios to see if it picks up the hard drive?
(on boot up, push the delete or F10 or ESC buttons) One of the buttons will get you into the bios then check the boot options or the standard information. You can also set the default values and save.
If you have Win 7 then get Win7 cd and let boot up from the CD. You can choose to repair and this normally works well.

Hello
First thing you do is to see what hard disc installed in your laptop. You can check that by checking it in your bios system. To check in your bios system first turn off your computer then press delete while your laptop is booting up. Then you will see if there is a hard disk detected in your lap top if there is a detected hard drive this means you have a problem in your windows installed in your lap top.
There is also a reason why those message appear if the first boot of your laptop is the CD/DVD ROM. Check you CD/DVD ROM if there a CD inside this may the first on to read while the laptop booting up. Remove the cd inside your CD/DVD ROM. Then restart your laptop. Check your hard disk connector it may have some loose contact thats why your laptop did not recognize the hard disc.
Hope this can help keep on touch with fixya. Hope to hear some testimonial from you. . .

When the laptop is turned on, it only gets to the logo page which says In touch with tomorrow: toshiba. It does not boot at all, and only gives the options of hitting f2 or f12 for booting options, neither...

The problem is not with the battery or the AC power supply
( I assume you tried pressing F8 safe mode before the loading screen appeared?)

Get into the Bios by pressing ( I think its F2 or F10) as soon as the laptop starts up (before loading screen).
Check in the main page, that the laptop "sees" the hard drive. If it does not, then the hard drive has failed. (you can check this by substituting another drive and seeing if the laptop recognizes this in the Bios).
See also that the DVD rom is recognised
In the Boot order screen, check that the boot order is set to 1st boot DVD/CD drive and the 2nd is set to hard drive.

Using a windows install disc, boot to CD and see if windows wants to install (if the hard drive is recognised in the Bios but has an internal fault, Windows will tell you before it installs the OS)

If the drive IS recognised and windows installs ok, let it go to the 2nd repair option, where it looks for previous installations of windows and let it repair the system (your files will not be wiped)

If Windows reports that there is no HDD, then you should try a spare HDD and see if it will format and install .

At best, it sounds like the MBR has been corrupted, in which case the over the top install above should fix it, at worst, the hard drive has failed and will need replacing

it looks like windows is corrupt or your hard drive is faulty. if you have a recovery disc try using it to repair wondows. if that doesn't work you might need to do a clean install which means you'll lose your documents. if that still doesn't work it's likely to be your hard drive. even if you run a check disc on your hard drive and it passes that doesn't mean there isn't a fault with it

Laptop cannot find new sata disk

Can you provide me the details of the laptop. Also; are to trying to install Windows XP OS on your notebook.

If you are trying to install Windows XP on your notebook; then we need to disable the SATA on the notebook by using the external USB based floppy drive or using the nlite application burning the XP OS disc with a set of SATA drivers to install and recognize the hard drive.

TOSHIBA A135-S2386- I HAVE AN ERROR WHEN TURNING ON MY LAPTOP

If there is anything on the hard drive worth saving, I would remove it right away and buy an external hard drive enclosure and connect it to another computer and pull all of the important files off of it. Although it might not be readable, if the hard drive has failed.

If you don't care about anything on the hard drive. Then and only then would I attempt to format it. Many ways to do this. With the Recovery Disc (which comes with many computers), a Microsoft Windows install disc, BartPE disc (free), Linux Live CD (free), etc.

Just let us know what OS (operating system) you want to put back on this computer and how you want to do this. And what kind of Windows install disc that you have (i.e. Recovery, MS Windows, etc.). And if you have access to another computer with Windows XP and a CD burner.

And right now, it does sound like your hard drive has failed. And if reformatting and reinstalling isn't going to work if this is true.
