If you using any Windows OS version older than 2000, you will have to install the drivers before you can use the flash drive. Honestly, you can hardly get a flash drive with drivers cd now, so you consider an upgrade ok. It is possible also that the USB resource controller has been disabled from either the CMOS Setup environment or Device Manager. Some times too, when the USB connectors have been used for other peripherals like printers, scanners, etc, unplugging them for a flash drive may issue an error message and the drive will not work. Finally, try same on another pc know to be working with flash drive to know whether the drive itself has gone bad. Good luck
