Thanks for your input but I have since discovered that one of the 4 pins in the USB port is bent double and causing a short? (The plastic bit is also missing)

I have a HP Compaq dx2200 microtower. When I turn

Ed it sounds like a RAM problem. How much ram do you have. These days you need at least 1g. How big is your hard drive. You need to have at least 10g constantly free at all times. This might mean a larger one. You may be running 2.0 devices but is your system truly 2.0 or higher. Go to start, run, try this:
  • Right-click My Computer
  • Click on Properties
  • Click on the Hardware tab
  • Click on the Device Manager button
  • Scroll down as needed until you see Universal Serial Bus Controllers
  • Expand that by clicking on the boxed plus sign in front of Universal Serial Bus Controllers
At this point you should see something like this:
usb2.png "... on most machines the presence of 'Enhanced', even only once, means that all USB ports are USB 2.0 ports ..." Note the highlighted line: "Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller". While the exact text may vary, the key is the word "Enhanced".
If it's "Enhanced", it's USB 2.0. If it's not, then it's USB 1.x.
Now, wasn't that obvious?
Important: on most machines the presence of "Enhanced", even only once (which it typically is), means that all USB ports are USB 2.0 ports. Typically a machine will have only one type of port and this tells you which kind they all are.
The one exception to this scenario is a machine with USB 1.1 ports that has a USB 2.0 expansion card added. In this case I know of no way to tell which is which, other than simply knowing you added a USB 2.0 card to a machine with built-in 1.1 ports. Obviously in a case like this, the built-in ports are 1.1, and the added expansion card ports are 2.0.
Hope this helps.

I have seen USB ports fried like this, by USB devices. It can render them usesless.

What you can try, is go to the Device Manager, and uninstall the USB ports there. Then go up to Scan for hardware changes. That should automatically reinstall the drivers, in case they got hosed.

If that still does not work, they may be dead. I have seen it where even a device light works, which means there is power on the USB port, but the communications part does not work.

In a desktop PC, you can get an add in PCI card, and route the ports to the front, that is a possible fix for you.

Keyboard, mouse, front USBs,DVD recorder not working

It sound like your USB Ports is the problem. Go to the Hardware manager delete the USB Ports and then shutdown and power back up.
The system then should reinstall the USB Ports and associated drivers. If not the USB Ports were probably fried by the power outage.

USB suddenly malfunctioning on Dell TOwer

It does sound like your ports on the front might be bad. They usually connect to a seperate port on the motherboard than the rear ones, and I have seen devices short out the front ports, such as a USB music player.

You can remove the ports on the device manager, and they should come back ok, without worry. However, I doubt that is going to help the front ones. I think you have a hardware problem.

If that is the case, the easiest solution is to get a USB hub, and run a USB cable from the rear, to the front of the computer.

Flash drive ports on teh fron wont work on pc

If your system is USB 1 rather than USB 2 then some flash drives will not work. Not all usb 2 flashdrives are backwards compatible. My kids flasdrives will only work on my usb2 ports & will not work at all on my wife's computer which has the older usb 1 ports.
