Question about Dell UltraSharp 1800FP 18.1" LCD Flat Panel Monitor

Dell LCD monitor suddenly loses power

My Dell FP1800 LCD monitor was working fine. I was using my pc one time and the monitor suddenly went blank. The green power on light disappeared.

In trouble shooting, I checked the power cable, fuses and connection. I even used other working power cables. My graphics card is definitely work with other monitors. My monitor is about 5-years old. What happened to my beloved LCD and is there any chance of making use of it again?

Thank you.

Hello,

Five years is a long time for an LCD panel. You definetly got your money's worth.

But, if your trouble shooing has led you to this conclusion I can also only conclude that the power driver inside your panel just gave up the ghost.

However, try giving Dell a call, for what's thats worth and see what they have to say.

You might also want to ask this expert "Robotek" what he may think as he is a board troubleshooter and could give you an answer if one is there.

It may have problem in the power supply due to bad DC filters caps as shown in my pictures here:
http://s807.photobucket.com/albums/yy352/budm/Dell%20%20E196FP%20Rev%20A03/
Bad DC can cause a lot of strange symptom.
If you are going to DIY and already try the monitor with another PC, and have proper tools and know safety precaution then please read on:
Most common failures in the LCD monitors are bad capacitors (bulging top/seal or leaking) in the power supply (they should be replaced in a set), blown fuses; poor solder joints, failed inverter circuits (blown fuse, shorted transistors, shorted/open transformers), bad lamps (poor solder connections or worn out lamps). You will need to open it up and inspect the inside, see example of failed DELL monitors to get some ideas what to look for: http://s807.photobucket.com/albums/yy352/budm/
Post back what you see inside so we can guide you further and it will help out other people in the future also.

Dell 1800fp dead

Each monitor has a different response to "no activity" from the system. So for the monitor, if you get a chance, try your monitor on another machine that you know does function. At work, neighbour, or other.

For the computer, does the it (beep) or POST (Power On Selft Test) when you turn it on, do you see and hear what you would if the monitor was connected?

If it sounds normal, then everything should be fine and luck might have it, your backup monitor is not working either, try another one from the same friend or neighbour above.

If it doesn't POST, you could have a video or other card or ribbon connection loose in the computer. Either you or a friend, or the service center, whichever feels comfortable reseating all the external and internal equipment, bearing in mind static electricity and proper handling measures for the computer.

Since you have tried another monitor with your computer, then we can only assume that your LCD monitor had gone bad.
If the light is green but you can't see anything on the screen, then most likely the backlight has gone bad. Unless you want to take the monitor apart, I would suggest buying a new monitor.

Dell 1800FP - no power

Hi pcpiuk

If you have a multimeter, and want to get into the electronics of it all, you could rip the covers off and sus it out. Here is a pictorial guide on whats in it. You need to check the power supply for operation. If it appears to be producing voltage(they usually do or they dont) then it will be ok. The common cause of failure in the power supply is the regulator IC ICE2AS01 an 8-pin DIP chip, and resolder the entire PC. Around power devices I use solder with 2% silver content as it creates much tougher solder joint. If the power supply checks ok, then the inverter is the next spot to check. Just replace it if it appears to be the problem. You can get spares to rebuild the power supply and even new boards from ebay or Dell direct.
If you have any trouble getting parts, comment back to me here.
