Problem with NEC PlasmaSync 42MP1 42 inch - goes to standby w/no picture
Hi. My NEC 42MP1 plasma will power on, but I hear a high-pitched whine, hear a couple relays switch off/on and then goes into standby (red light) with no picture. I have read similar problems here, but no answers as of yet.. Any help is greatly apprciated. I tried holding down "INPUT" while powering up, as someone suggested, but no effect. Thanks for any help!

If you can hear any buzzing from more than
a few feet then the TV is defective and needs to be replaced. Buzzing is a
common defect among plasma TVs regardless of brand. It has nothing to do with
the plasma cells working; usually it's a defective board or a power supply
problem or something like that.

Have you tried pressing the "Input select/Exit" button? Right after pressing the power button and the light turns green, press this button until you get to the right input that you are connected to, and hopefully you should see your picture. I had this same issue when I first got this T.V., Hopefully this helps!
According to the manual for "POWER/STANDBY indicator is blinking in red":
"The temperature inside the main unit has become too high and has activated the protector."
"Promptly switch off the power of the main unit ans wait until the internal temperature drops."
"If the monitor becomes too hot, the overheat protector will be activated and the monitor will be turned off. If this happens, turn off the power to the monitor and unplug the power cord. If the room where the monitor is installed is particularly hot, move the monitor to a cooler location and wait for the monitor to cool for 60 minutes."
Check the +170 volt test point on the power board (not the power filter board, the one that the plug comes into) but the one to the right of that board. It has a 5v test point (TP +5v) , a +170 and a +70. I've found that the +170 transformer goes bad, and won't allow you to adjust the voltage using the pot screw.
Same problem here. PX-42VM2A (NEC PlasmaSync 42MP2) Turns on (status light green) then goes to standby mode (status light red) after what sounds like some electrical relays clicking over. Hi Gemma - have a look at this forum - it may be similar to what you are experiencing.
Things don't look good for NEC owners I must say!
