I have had this handycam for three years now and only once was I able to install it under imaging devices. I have called and emailed Sony with no results. None of the movie software recognize this handycam. The Sony DDX-A1010 USB device must appear under the DVD/CD-ROM file in the hardware file under Systems Properties. This driver does not get installed under this file, so the camara does not get recognized. I do not know what else to do.
Cant get connected to computer through USB
If you look on Pg 96 of the owners manual, Sony only provides you with a storage device driver not an imaging device driver. Using your camcorder as an imaging device is software dependent only on particular software programs. Since Sony only talks about the software that comes with the camcorder, that is the only one Sony will support.
If you are using another vendors software, you can check with them to see if it will work as an imaging device.
The only other option you have is to get a hold of a video capture card and play it back into the computer that way using the av cables. The video capture card will be the imaging device.
Some programs such as Pinnacle Studio will allow you to import the DVD directly into the hard drive as a storage device.
It is designed to work as an external storage device, which it is and Windows can't change that.
