Yes, a sudden lost of power can cause multitude of problems from hard drive problem to CPU failure.

BUT the data would still be there on your HD you just had a boot sector problem.

A simple XP cd would have fixed the problem. all you had to do is boot up from a XP cd and tell it to repair the boot sector, since XP make 2 copies of the boot sector.

so, i dont think the power company is liable, since your suppose to have a UPS system on your computer, power surges or outages can occur at anytime from mother nature to man made.

Hope this clear up the problem.

next time try to get a pro on your computer dont use those system restore disk, it will wipe your data off. its does say that in the disclaimer too.

Yes, a loss of power CAN cause your hard drive to not function when you turn it back on; as an experienced PC tech I've seen it many times before. However, your problem likely could have been solved had you booted with a boot CD and ran a chkdsk command.

If the problem disappears when you move the computer back to the previous location, it's most likely something in the new location that is causing the problem. Could be a bad power outlet or some heavy duty electrical interference.

Boot from a Linux Live cd and download the installer for a new antivirus on your pc: the best free one (and the third best overall) is
http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download
While you're there make a backup of all your files. Reboot normally and install it - accept the offer of a boot scan. Avast will install , reboot, and start scanning.
But i must warn you - it can remove the infection but it can't replace the damaged Windows files - for that you will have to perform a Repair install.

Downloaded games ends with a .zip .rar .exe or .msi file format in order to install the downloaded file. If your unable to open the format it means your download is corrupted or you have downloaded the wrong file format.

I had exactly the same problem today. I reinstalled the passwordlock software (http://www.sony.net/Products/Media/Microvault/products/usm-ex/index.html#download) and everything works fine again.
The installation procedure creates a new Security.FSD file, so be sure to make a copy of this file and move the copy back to the USB stick after reinstalling the passwordlock software. Otherwise you will loose all secured data. Security.FSD is a hidden file, so windows explorer must be set to show these files.

This problem can be any number of issues.

1. Heat. Make sure the air vents on the tower are free from dirt and debris. Open the side up and, using a can of air found in most electronic departments at stores, blow off the dust on the fan and heatsink which resides on top of the CPU. Also blow out as much dust as you can. If your computer is fairly dusty then this should solve your problem, if not check out the other things.

2. Power supply. Sometimes when a power supply begins to fail, it doesn't put out enough voltage to the various devices inside your PC when under load. Swap out the power supply with one from a know working system to verify.

3. Memory. Remove and reseat the memory chips inside the computer. Download a program like memtest to run checks on your memory.

4. Hard Drive. Sometimes when a hard drive begins to fail, it loses valuable windows files. The computer chugs along up until a point it looks for a file then it kills the system.

Based on the issue you described, I believe it to be a heat issue as the computer is designed to automatically shut down if the CPU reaches a critical temperature to protect the internal components.
