I want to upgrade from cd rw to dvd/cd rw

Hi,I hope you can help.Of course Dell wants me to buy from them.I hear I can buy alot cheaper and maybe better if I knew what I was even talking baout exactly. So, here's what Dell says I need I-OMagic 16x/4x/16x DVD RW and 40x/24x/ CD RW with plus/minus signs there. USB 2.0 External DVD RW Drive.Part # 1DVD16DDME.
Talking to other people I don't know in Staples, etc. say I can buy from Newegg.com cheaper and better and it will work but how am I to know for sure?
Any help and info would be great.Thank you

Okay. Again reminding people out there I have no idea what I'm talking about exactly.

Basically, what you're saying is if it's DVD/CD RW internal drive that goes inside the case where my current CD RW is I then have to worry about whatever the interface is and how do I find that out? OR if I go USB external then the DVD/CD RW just sits on top like a printer sits off to the side right?

Check this link:
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim3000/en/SM/parts.htm#wp1077842

you can buy an internal dvd/cdrw combo drive and all you have to do is follow the procedures in the link.

another option is an external dvd/cdrw combo drive but it is an expensive device although it is much easier to install it instead of opening the casing of the desktop.

A dell dimension 3000 has an IDE internal drive so as long as you get one that says IDE on it it should work.

and yes a usb one would sit off to the side like a printer but may also be slower and more expensive

If you are looking to replace the internal drive, then as long as you purchase a drive with the same interface it will work. If you are looking for a USB external drive then any one will work.

The only thing Dell was correct with is it should have +/- signs.

Upgrade compatibilty

You can upgrade the more the merrier in my opinion however Dell can often be integrated parts that means you have to purchase goods from Dell. You may have a model that is not that way. So depending check out your RAM and see how much you have, you can always get more but there is a limit on the board. So go to Dell.com and check out the stats of your motherboard for upgrades to that board. Go to support and downloads. Or surf around do not trust just any web page for this information Dell is articular with its boards.
You can always get a Combo DVD-RW Combo which will read and write CD's as well. That is why it is a combo drive. They fit just about any computer and you can get those online cheap or your local retailer.
Video cards are integrated in the board see if you have PCI or AGP slot available it depends on your model. You can use a video card other than the one attached to the motherboard. Make sure the slots are compatible. There is usually one AGP and several PCI slots maybe one or two extra depending on the case and board. So you have your research and work cut out for you.
I hope I somewhat explained what is entailed in an upgrade for your Dell start at the dell.com website first and seek out your specific model. I have provided a link for you Click This

Dvds are not recognized

hi h0tr0dh00dlu
if dvd's are not recognized
try to see if you dvd drive is shown in your os. double click My Computer to see.
Also checked if your disk drive is capable of playing dvd format.
I checked that Dell Dimension 4500 PC only comes with a bundle of cd-rw so dvd's can't be played
If not the best option is to buy a dvd drive @ http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=6463543&Sku=S203-8583%20OEM

Hope it helps, Feedbacks appreciated

I have a dell dimension 2200 that has a CD RW . I would like to replace it with a DVD RW or DVD CD RW. Is there going to be a problem with doing that? I have already replaced the CD RW years ago so I know...

You shouldn't have any problems upgrading to a DVD RW or DVD/CD RW as long as you make sure that you have all the drivers needed. The drive will probably have a disc containing all the drivers required, but in case it doesn't, simply visit the manufacturers website and they should have a driver download there :)

Don't forget to rate me if this helps :)

Dvd-rw does not work when inserted in D drive the message returns "please insert DVD into drive"

Hi! You may have a problem with the optical drive/CD rom drive. The lens may be dirty so i suggest you run a cd lens cleaner. If it still doesnt help, I believe you need to buy a CD rom replacement. Hope this helps.

I have WINXPSP3 on my PC and it won't find the driver for the GSA-h21n model DVD-RW drive that can with the DELL computer. How do I reinstall this drive?

You should not need a driver for that unless you are running an OS older than windows XP.

It should be plug-and-Play (power down first of course)

As far as light scribe, that depends on the CD/DVD buring software to support.

Hope this helps.

Cd/dvd rom

It may be really dirty or just to old or has had laser failure.

There cheap these days, and CD drive with DVD Rom reading ability are like $20 to $30 depending on speed and brand.

A DVD/CD RW writer reader are also getting cheaper, around $60 and up usually.

And some advice. Dont by HP Pavilions. I've worked on alot and i find they have outdated parts cuz there remanufactured from older computers and you have a hard time upgrading due to hard to find drivers

Dell Dimension 4700 CD/DVD drive not reading

The CD Drive has probably gone bad. You will have to buy a replacement drive. I recommend newegg.com. The price will be about 30$ for a DVD burner. If you want just a DVD player or CD Burner then it will be even cheaper. Dell provides a very easy to read step by step guide with pictures on replacing your drive here:

Good Luck!

Hope this helped!
