Question about Computers & Internet

Replacing Motherboard My Gateway GT4024 desktop won't boot and monitor doesn't connect. Same monitor works on different PC and because the video card is part of the motherboard I assume the motherboard is broken. I took it to Geek Squad they diagnosed the same. They don't replace motherboards. So if I purchase a new motherboard (MS-7248) how hard will it be to do it myself? I'm not 100% sure that it is the motherboard but when I power it up with a new video card in it, the monitor shows Gateway but doesn't go through the boot process. The hard drive fan is running. The motherboard will cost about $200 delivered. Should I replace the motherboard or just buy a new computer?

Thanks edric.  I decided I can't afford the downtime or risk creating more problems so I took it to a computer repair place but don't know what they have found out yet.
    thanks again!

Thought I would close this out by reporting what we found. When I removed the CD drive I bumped the memory just a bit out of place which caused all the trouble. Luckily my tech guy methodically thought through and tested all the possibilities before just buying a new motherboard or new computer. I was embarrassed that that is all it was but also very relieved...I guess that's why you call an expert.

There are things to consider when buying a motherboard.

  1. The type of processor you are using must fit on your new motherboard (compatibility issues)
  2. Memory.
Better ask your local store for a compatible motherboard. Unless your going to buy the same board .

If your purchase a new motherboard it comes with a instruction manual complete with installation guidelines and illustration to help you out. In case you have trouble doing so you can always contact your vendor or the manufacturer for help (online, toll free numbers).

If your having doubts whether your motherboard is defective you can run tests but you will need extra parts. You could ask your friends if they have one. In my case I usually test other components ex. processor, memory with a spare working motherboard. Fit in the componenets with your spare motherboard and if it runs chances are your suspected board is defective. Or better have it checked at another service center for a 2nd opinion.

Gateway computer is stuck in power saving mode.

The Gateway 818GM is a few years old but if - hopefully - the motherboard auto-detects a video card, try removing the MSI MS-8936 video card & swapping over the monitor lead to the other VGA connector fed from the motherboard.

Failing that, if you think it's a faulty video card, they're cheaply available on eBay eg for US$6.70 here:

Gateway GT5040 Graphics Card

This model Gateway desktop computer has a built-in video card.
Connect the monitor to the Gateway motherboard video port and the boot up and go into the BIOS and select disable the built-in video.
Shut down then connect the monitor to the 8800GTX video card and boot up the Gateway computer. The video should then appear in the monitor.

Also, make sure that you're buying PCI cards, and not PCI-e.

I have a gateway gt4024 and was trying to find out if I am able to upgrade the existing MB, CPU and Graphics card without getting a complete tower.

No, the motherboard is a proprietary format, specific to just this model and the case was designed around it.

I have a Gateway GT5056, no monitor will work.

The video card you have is integrated into the motherboard. You would have to buy a whole new motherboard to fix the problem. It would almost be cheaper to buy a new computer though.

Video card upgrade for Gateway GT4024

Try looking up for Updated drivers at Gateway for your Computer. Also find out what video it's using (ie. NVidia, Radeon, etc.) Many times the Video Card maker will have the latest updates for video cards before they get to the computer maker.

Best video card upgrade for Gateway GT4024???? Stock computer....except ram upgrade to 2x1gb....want to increase the video handling from the slow onboard video

Your upgrade options for a better video card are really dependent on how much you want to spend.  You have a PCI express x16 slot which is what your are going to use.  Visit www.newegg.com and you can look up video cards by manufacturer, memory amount, and even filter it by how much you are willing to spend.  Here's a link at newegg for "the best video card upgrade":
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161203

Since there is a newer PCI 2.0 Express connection on newer computers, you can get your video cards cheaper now.  You will notice a huge improvement with any video card you choose since onboard video is about the worst.  Just remember to go into the device manager and disable onboard video card after you install the new video card.
Good Luck

Monitor is black when computer is on

Make sure your video card is properly seated on the motherboard. Also, it might be a good time to open up your case and blow it out with compressed air. I use an air compressor. Sometimes you need to reseat the hardware. If that doesn't work you might have a faulty video card.
