I have the same issue as well. I have updated all drivers, updated bios settings. this occured after installing xp sp3. since then at random will reboot or crash. taken whole pc apart checked cables, power supply, cpu fan, and hdd. Booting up is severly delayed, sometimes hdd is not immediately recognized. installed new memory, disconected every non essential hardware and problem persist. It doesn't seem to be hardware problem. I have updated video drivers several times with original intel845 chipset, both versions as well as microsoft's digital sig drivers, no luck. hate being beaten by crappy insignia d400a with xp. HELP Please

I've heard from an Insignia support staff that "Insignia" was going to drop all computer products because they really do not have enough experience in the area, after a large percentage of their PCs were being sent back for frequent repairs. One of the most common issues, which two Insignia D400-A PCs that I've owned had several times, was a poorly mounted heatsink and insufficient heat sink grease being used during manufacture.

I also have two D400-A PCs still running strong for nearly ten years now, simply because I replaced the heat sinks myself with sufficient grease and better heat sinks.

I just repaired one of these that had the reboot problem. The CPU heatsink mounting bracket broke on one end which caused CPU overheating. I replaced the plastic mounting bracket and re-installed the CPU heatsink. Problem solved.

Make sure your plastic braket didn't break on one end. This will cause the CPU to overheat and the computer to shut down.

It it would seem to be overheating, so it could be the CPU fan that is faulty, or the CPU Thermostat. In either case it would need a visual inspection to be 100% certain.

I have an Insignia d400a, given to me by my mother. I know it discontinued but i needed a pc so i wanted to wipe the hard drive with the dvd and Im having a really hard time. I reconfigured the BIoS to run...

It should be able to boot from the DVD or CD rom drives before checking the hard drive by default, but somebody could have changed bios settings which could cause it to not work. The factory (OEM) restore disk is DVD media, so you would need to use the DVD drive.

F2 during bootup to enter BIOS and check your boot sequence to make sure that the DVD drive comes before the hard drive. Also, the card reader on D400's tend to fail and no longer work, so it may be a good idea to dissable that from the boot sequence. The card reader can usually be found as a USB device in the boot sequence menu.

How do I access the bios at startup, On A Insignia D400A? I see no prompt or keys, to activate Bios.

Insignia is a Best Buy proprietary brand. In order to get you to spend money at the geek squad, they keep this information pretty secret. Hit "F1" during POST. That should do it. It works on most Insignia models. If not, you should call best buy and ask them about your specific model.

How to restore to factory

Factory restore requires the OEM restore DVD disk.

First boot the PC and press F2 during boot to enter BIOS. Change BIOS settings to factory default, to make sure the boot device sequence and all other settings are as they should be.
Then insert the Restore DVD into the DVD-rom drive and save & exit BIOS settings. It should then reboot and load from the restore disk.

How do i use my restore dvd to restore my insignia d400a back to factory settings?

Go into the BIOS (press F2 during boot) , change the boot order - put the cd first and save the change, put the restore disk in the dvd, reboot, wait for the disk to launch and follow the instructions on the screen.

How to get out of safe mode

you need to press F8 repeatedly during startup until you come up with a menu select last know good configuration. If that does not work please insert your windows disk into the drive and restart and boot from the cd. Good through the installation process. When it detects a previous installation of windows select repair installation. If that does not fix it you will need to do a clean install.
