Release Button? I would like to know how to program a button on my phone to release/disonnect a call without using the handset/hookswitch. I have a headset with a lifter arm to pick up the handset and when I disconnect the call using my headset, it sounds as though I'm slamming the phone down in people's ears. Thanks!

Unfortunately, the old handsets may not be compatible with the new base. The DS6251-2 base only communicates with the DS6250 accessory handset. See the accessory list here: https://www.vtechphones.com/store/pd/4158/DS6251-2-2-Line-2-Handset-Cordless-Phone-with-Answering-System-Smart-Call-Blocker . If the old handsets have been deregistered from the previous base unit, place a handset in the cradle on the base. Wait to see if the handset is registered. Alternately, press and hold Page until you see Registering. Release the Page button. Then press Quiet/# (below 9) on the handset. Wait for the handset to be registered.
To deregister handsets from the DS6251 base, press and hold Page. You'll see Registering Please Wait followed by Deregister all devices? At this point, release the Page button. Then press and release Page or the soft key for Yes.
I hope this helps. These are shown in the manual for the accessory handset. The manual is on available on the accessory handset page: https://www.vtechphones.com/store/pd/4184/DS6250-2-Line-Accessory-Handset-for-DS6251-series-phones . The current link to the manual is https://cdn-web.vtp-media.com/products/DS/DS6250/DS6250_CIB_V2_20200623.pdf .
Is the handset you are trying to register de-registered? if not it will not register to another base until it is.first de-registered.
To de-register the handset do the following- With a charged battery in the handsetEnter *331734# then without pause Press and Release theMenu Select Button. You will hear a Beep. Handset would then be De-registered..
Then place the handset on the Main Base cradle and follow the instruction that come up on the handset display.if the handset still does not register then most likely the base memory is full and will have to be re-set .
To re-reset the Base:- Remove any handset from the main base cradle. Then Press and Hold the Locator or find HS or handset Locator button until the IN USE light comes on and begin to flash then release it and immediately with out pause press and release it again. That will re-set the base memory. All your handset will then be de-registered and will to be re-registered. Place each handset to be re-registered on the Main Base cradle and follow the instructions on the the handset display and they will register.
to use the headset port you can program a button that toggles between the handset piece and the headset port (under the handset),
assuming that your installer has used standard feature codes, press the following;
? Press Speaker key.
? Dial 751.
? Press an available Function key. (one of your unused 24 buttons)
? Dial 05.
? Press Speaker key.
the Function button is now your Headset pickup/release button
Sounds like your hookswitch might be defective or in need of cleaning. With Cisco phones, you can disassemble the phone and clean the hookswitch circuit contact, and reassemble the phone and it often solves the problem. Not sure how easy this is to do with a Mitel handset but maybe worth looking into.
Check that the hookswitch is operating properly. With the handset out of the cradle, push the hookswitch down, it should give some resistance then pop back up after you release it. Possibly it is not popping back up fully, therefore it is seizing the line always. Most switchhooks have a spring connected to them inside the phone to allow them to operate properly, if the spring is damaged it could cause the problem you've described.
If using a headset simply use the headset/handset button to release the call. If you actually need the release key it must be done in system programming and requires access to ext 205 and a 2020-SD. here is the key sequence for changing bottom button on right side for ext 200 *#*#1*2*3 Spkr 39 Hold spkr 000# press bottom button, dial 476 then hold, spkr ## hold , Spkr ## hold
You may try this:
1. Pick up the handset and listen for a dial tone.
2. Press and release the STORE button.
3. Enter the phone number(up to 16 digits)you want to store into memory(The telephone number will not dial out)
4. Press and release the STORE button.
5. Press a one-digit number(0 - 9)on the keypad to store the phone number into the desired memory location.
6. Hang up the phone by returning the handset to the handset cradle on the base.
7. To store more phone numbers in memory, repeat steps 1 - 6
Good Luck !!
I would assume this could have been a product that was returned to the company that you purchased it from. Follow these instructions.
1. 1. Disconnect power from the base by pulling the plug out of the back of the unit.
2. Press and hold the Page button and while holding the Page button reconnect the power.
3. Continue to hold the Page button until the charge/in use light flashes rapidly.
4. Release the Page button.
5. Press and release the page button on the base once. All handsets are de-registered and
HANDSET NEEDS REGISTRATION shows in the display.
Then
From the Handset Setup Menu:
1. Press the caller ID-volume ( 6 or 5) button to scroll to the REGISTRATION sub-menu.
2. Press the mute/program button to enter the menu. REGISTRATION 1YES 42NO - - -shows
in the display. The default setting is 2NO.
3. Use the touch-tone pad to select 1 for YES or 2 for NO. Or use the caller ID-volume ( 6 or
5) button to scroll to 1YES or 2NO.
4. If you select YES, press the mute/program button. HOLD BASE PAGE FOR 5 SECONDS, THEN
PRESS HANDSET PROGRAM shows in the display. (Your handset should be held near the
base during registration process.)
5. Press and hold the page button on the base unit until the charge/in use indicator flashes.
Press the handset mute/program button. REGISTERING shows in the display. HANDSET X
REGISTERED shows in the handset display, where X is the handset number. You may now
rename your handset. (Refer to Step 3 & 4 of Handset Name Section)
NOTE: IF you are re-registering the handset through the handset menu;
to rename your handset you must go to the Handset Name Section and
start from the beginning step.
I understand that you have tried the registation process. Sometimes with electronics, you have to start from ground 0, before it will work correct again.

Three possible problems - Bad handset, bad handset cord, or bad telephone. Try another handset and cord from a known good phone. If the problem phone still doesn't work the hookswitch spring may be weak. You can remove the screws from the bottom of the phone and take the bottom off. The hookswitch will have a small spring that you can stretch or rebend to put more upward force on the hookswitch to make it positively go off hook. Also the dtu phones have a jack for the handset and a jack for the headset on the bottom - make sure you are using the handset jack.
