Be sure to check the charge state of the battery with a voltmeter, and maybe have it load tested at a battery retailer to verify how good it is.

If the contacts are dirty, and it is not shiny and new looking when removed, then wire brush vigorously until it looks shiny and clean.

Reinstall, so that one can have reliable battery connections.

Good luck on this repair.

Problem shifting gears with column, park is reverse, 2 became drive?? 1996 mercury marquis with 197,000 miles. Will not start when I finally put it in park (had to really slide it hard to park) and then...

Very likely you have a loose connection on your transmission shift linkage, or you have a shift cable that is no longer tight.

First jack up the vehicle and secure with a jack stand. Check the connection on the drivers side of the transmission to make sure it is connected tight. There should be a nut holding the shift lever in place. If it is correctly fastened, remove the steering column plastic covers by unscrewing screws and check for loose connections.

My 96 Grand Marquis wont go into gear when I crank it up, can you help me? Before I put the keys in, it will switch all gears smoothly but once I crank it up it will not switch out of park.

for a quick fix, try putting the car in neutral, put the key in and start the car. you'll have to have the problem checked out. the shift lock solenoid circuit is faulty.

Help!!! w/my Grand Marquis

a simple test here may reveal the fault
put the hand brake on and in neutral
start the engine
if it idles ok then put your foot on the brake
if there are problems then have the brake booster replaced
that is indicated because at lights , you have you foot on the brake
when turning people use the foot on the brake to maintain control
