My country is USA. I have only one(1) jack. A dsl/phone filter is installed in 1 jack. I have been told that I would have to plug into the phone side an adapter which then could be used to plug in the phone line and fax line. What kind of adapter would I need? I have called and talked to at least 2 dozen people to no avail. I am getting desperate.

I have one phone jack in my apartment and moved my desk to the other side of the room, so now all i can run is one long phone line to the PC. So at the moment i can't have the landline working or the printer/fax machine working. How do i make it all work again without running all these extra lines across the room? DEFETT.

Phone off hook message

A "Phone Off Hook" message is not an error. It simply indicates that a telephone receiver is off the hook (the handset is lifted) and the telephone line is open. This message would be expected in the following situations:
  • A modem on the phone line is accessing the Internet.
  • A phone connected to the HP fax (or the same phone line) is using the line, or the handset has been lifted.
  • A credit card machine is using the phone line.
  • Another electronic device is using the phone line.
  • The Start Fax button was pressed with no telephone number entered. Pressing Stop or Cancel should return the display to a ready state.
When the other device is no longer using the phone line, the display should revert to the normal message. Checking the phone line The most common reason for this message is when a dial-up modem is accessing the Internet on the same phone line. Just as two phone calls cannot come in at the same time, two devices cannot use the phone line at the same time. If a broadband modem (such as DSL or ISDN) is on the same phone line and the message appears all the time, please contact your Internet provider for assistance. Even if a dial tone is present when listening to the phone line, the HP product may detect the broadband data connection at the higher line frequencies. Broadband modems must have a line filter installed to work correctly. Contact the telephone company for assistance. Please follow the directions below to verify functionality.
  1. Verify that the phone cable going into the HP fax product from the wall jack is a two-conductor cable type, not four-conductor. A two-conductor cable, like the one that ships with the HP product, has two copper leads in the connector. The connectors are usually clear, making it possible to see how many copper leads are inside the cable. Replace a four-conductor cable with a two-conductor cable.
  2. Disconnect the phone cable from the back of the HP product and the message should clear. If the message does not clear, unplug the power cable from the back of the unit, wait 15 seconds, and then plug in the power cable. If the message persists, see the "Problem still exists" section below.
  3. Disconnect the phone cable from the HP product and connect it to a single line phone. Pick up the handset and listen for a dial tone. If no dial tone is present, replace the phone cable. If a dial tone is still not present, a problem exists with the phone system. Continue with the steps below if a dial tone is present.
  4. Plug the phone cable back into the HP product and hang up any phones with a lifted handset.
  5. Disconnect, one at a time, other phones and devices using the same phone line. Check the HP product display after disconnecting each phone or device. If the message clears after disconnecting a phone or device from the line, the problem is with that phone or device.
  6. If the message still exists after unplugging all other phones or devices, see the "Problem still exists" section below.
Problem still exists If the problem still exists after performing the steps above, the line interface unit (LIU), the part that the phone line plugs into, may be defective or the HP product may need to be serviced.

Yes i want to find out if a cable modem will work with your dsl phone internet service?

No.

A cable-modem connects with a coax-cable to the cable-company's network, but a DSL-modem connects with telephone-cable to the telephone-company's network.

My epson cx9400 fax states that i need a DSL filter in order to use my fax, as I have Time Warner telephone service which is digital. I would like to know where I may obtain this filter, as I have checked...

You already have the filter if you have both phone and internet on the same line. The installer placed the filter between the lines the phones connect to and the outside line the computer connects to. Just connect the fax line to any working phone jack.

Fax doesn't recognize incoming phone call

Try this: using a cell phone, call your fax. Listen on the cell for a busy signal, fax tones, dial tone, etc. If the fax does not answer the cell, check the following: make sure the phone line is plugged into the LINE jack on the fax, NOT THE PHONE JACK. The phone jack is to connect a TELEPHONE to the fax. If problem still exists, press MENU on your MFC, and scroll to GENERAL SETUP, FAX. Scroll to SETUP RECEIVE, and, after writing down the settings, try changing the RING DELAY or RING TIME settings. If problem is still there, press CLEAR/BACK button until GENERAL SETUP appears on screen. Scroll down to INITIAL SETUP, and select RECEIVE MODE. Try changing RECEIVE MODE settings. Write them down before you change anything.

Cannot send faxes!

Take an ordinary phone and connect it to the auxillary port on the back of the fax. Call the number you are trying to fax and listen to see if it connects and the other fax picks up. Be sure you are using any prefix numbers required such as a 9, or a 1 and area code if required. HP recommends that you use a 2 wire phone cable, not a 4 wire (see how many metal connectors are in the jack to tell). Of course, if you are on a DSL line you want a filter installed for the fax. If this doesn't work, try a different phone cable. You could also have a bad modem in the fax. That would be last on my list. Good luck.

Lexmark x6150 unalbe to fax phone line is active using dsl

Hey Tony - Did you recently hook this up to the DSL for the first time? This unit is supposedly not able to work with a DSL line.

The fax modem in your AIO is an analog device and cannot be used on an ISDN, DSL, or PBX digital phone service. However, you can connect certain devices to your AIO that let you use the fax function in addition to these digital phone services.

To connect without an unsupported line:
Connect an active telephone cable from the AIO to the telephone wall jack.

To connect with an unsupported line:
If you use an ISDN phone service, you can connect to an analog telephone port (an R-interface port) on an ISDN terminal adapter.
For more help and to request an R-interface port, contact the ISDN provider.
If you use a DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) phone service, you can connect to a DSL filter or router that will allow for some analog (rather than digital) use.
If you use a PBX phone service, you can install an analog phone line for a fax machine.

If this was working on the DSL let me know. I don't know the location but obviously a separate phone jack is the easiest. Let me know. If this helps you fix it you can rate this as fixed. If you are just going to rate this as helpful I'd rather you please not rate it and just add a comment and say thanks for the info.
If you need more help just add a comment and I'll be glad to assist you further. Thanks.

Jeff
