Question about Toshiba 52HM95 52" HDTV Projection Television

1 Answer

Loud hum with ramp up and ramp down sound

My 52HM95 was purchased in 12/05 and still has a great picture. It recently deveoped a loud objectional hum during operation. When I turn the set on there is a 3 second ramp up sound like a table saw turning on and the same sound when I turn it off. I have purchased the Service Manual and learned there are actually 3 fans. The manual has parts lists and exploded views but does not have any detail about replacing the light engine.

How can I tell if its a fan or color wheel problem?

Please email me at with any suggestions. Ray

Thanks Mike for the speedy answer. I am an Electrical Engineer and have mechanical ability but I think replacing the light engine is a little beyond what I am comfortable tackeling.

The service manual says "When the Light Engine Unit is replaced with a new one, adjustment is required. Adjustment is made from the service mode. The adjusting items consist of of CWDL, CWDH and DMDB"

Do you know if this adjustment is really required or is it a simple matter to replace the light engine.

Has anyone heard if Toshiba is standing behind this light engine problem for longer than the 12 month standard warentee?

I ordered a new Light Engine for my 52HM95 from on July 15 for $456. Now I learn this item is backordered and they now show 8/16/08 as a ship date.

Toshiba's web site is showing an extended warentee on the Light Engine for certain models but not mine. One other little aggravating problem is my TV rests on the Toshiba special stand and the TV must be raised about 5 inches in order to get at the 13 screws to remove the back. I plan to use books as shims. Just hope a new light engine is a good investment. Ray Winberg

It is the color wheel but the bad news is Toshiba will not sell the color wheel for this model, you have to but the entire light engine. part # 23405474 for about $500.00

I'm The Lead Tech here at Maier Tv in Spokane WA. when we replace a light engine we almost never have to adjust them, they seem to work fine right out of the box, It may sound complicated but on a scale of 1 to 10 we put this light engine replacment at about a 4. there a a few conection and about six screws that hold this in and all the conectors will ony go in one spot

Toshiba 52hmx95 dlp tv. took back cover off. the fan cooling the lamp, makes a loud humming that fan is hard to get.(this is a three wire.only finding two wire.)is there a three wire fan i can...

Fan is available at for about $80.00. Replacement should be as simple as unplugging the fan cord and removing a couple screws to remove. Do the work with the unit unplugged from the wall. Reverse the procedure to install the new unit.

Thanks for using FixYa and the great rating.

Our TV is making a loud humming noise. We think

It's likely your color wheel rather then your fan. I've replaced quite a few of these and the fans are usually good. Get and estimate - I generally charge $250-350 Total
also google your model # and color wheel to investigate further.

GU1500XTL loud humming sound during the cycle, getting louder

The run capacitor on the main wash motor needs replacing. Eventually it will just hum and overheat instead of rotating, so better replace it now before it overheats.

I doubt you can acces it easily yourself, as it may be away from the motor, and have to be tracked down.

GE SidexSide PSS26SGPASS Makes Humming Noise

GE refrigs have a variable speed evaporator fan motor that is controlled by a computer board on the back of the refrig. now the noise you are hearing is most likely the fan motor ramping up and down in speed (some of my customers say it sounds like a ghost). if its a continuous ramping up and down then the speed cotroller on the board is bad and must be replaced. if its just an occasional sound then thats normal and nothing to worry over.

Btw the reason the noise stops when the door opens is because the fan shuts off when you open the door.
