Our unit is about 4 years old - compressor seems to be running - Refirgerator is only slightly cold at highest setting ONLY in a few areas (crisper drawer) and freezer is mostly freezing - but probably not as much as supposed to for such a high setting - I can't believe this is unusual nor too hard to fix

I have an amana side by side refrigerator SXD26VE it is about 9 years old
the freezer is cold but no cold enough to freeze water. Last time I had this issue the coils where frozen and I ended up replacing the thermostat and that seemed to have fixed the issue. That was 4 years ago, I thought I was having the same issue so I unplug and remove the thermostat to get another one but the store was close so I plugged it back in. It seems to work but the freezer isn't cold enough to freeze water is there something else I can check?

I think I have the same problem as most of yo described...Freezer it's fine but refrigerator not getting enough cold air...i have defrosted freezer overnight but still when powered back looks like refrigerator is getting some air flow on the higher (9) setting but that is most likely not enough, is there a part that i should be looking at replacing? When I move settings from low to high for refrigerator it doesn't change the amount of cold that is flowing in...Thanks for any help

my frig is running consantlt and noisy frig part not cooling but freezer is i do have some frost builup on radiater should i just thaw out or is my defrost thermostat bad.

  • Anonymous Nov 17, 2008

Freezer is cold enough to freeze everything. There is no frost of ice build up in the freezer. The refrigirator is not very cold at all and the motor continually runs. I have both the refridgerator and freezer set to the coldest setting to see if anything happens.

    Thanks!

We have a Maytag side by side refrigerator, and the freezer works fine, gets cold easily, but the refrigerator side is hopeless. Most of the time it just doesn't get cold and food goes off. Sometimes it works for a period of time, but then will suddenly get warm again. Turning it off and on again seems to help sometimes, but we need a solution to the problem, as too much food has been thrown out.

I have a Jenn Air side by side about 10 years old. The refrigerator is barely cold on the highest level. The freezer is working fine.

  • thirdmeridia Apr 23, 2009

No cooling at all in the 6-yr old refrigerator, freezer not cold enough. We removed the interior bottom panel of the freezer & sure enough there was an ice dam. We melted all of it with a hair dryer. Now, everything is working as it should. I hope that it lasts longer than 2 weeks.

I finally took everything out of the freezer and took off the panel which was frozen solid so i defrosted that with a hair dryer and then i vacuumed the back which was covered up in dust, including the coils . Now the whole refrigerator is cooling just fine. I wonder how long it would stay that way....maybe for another 5 years?

If you have not already tried, clean the dust out from the vents. Typically there is a vent at the bottom front that can be removed easily. Also, unplug the unit and remove the panel near the bottom rear where the icemaker water and power cable go in.

Vaccuum out both areas gently with a shop vac. Careful, there is delicate insulation in there you don't want to tear up. But if you do it's no huge deal.

I've had my fridge 10 years and I've had to do this a couple of times. Last time I had a repairman come out because I didn't understand the problem. This time I did it myself.

I starting having this issue about few weeks ago... The freezer is fine, but the fridge becomes warmer by the day - the temp in the fridge is hotter than the room temperature. Since Maytag was of no help... I removed all items from the freezer and found that the back panel was all iced up. Took the panel off and found the entire cooling pipes were enclosed in ice - cutting off the airflow to the fridge. All fans, ice maker, etc were functional. Manually defrosted all the ice in the freezer, including any vents leading to the fridge (one at the top right, three in the bottom right), with a hair dryer. Now the fridge was getting the cold air it needed. The fridge ran for about two weeks without issues, and again the same issue. Sure enough, the the cooling pipes are engolfed in ice again.

Maytag support is more of a problem than help. First they denied assistance, then they provide assistance and generate a repair ticket, because this is covered under a recall they have/had, and scheduled a repair man fix the issue. The repair man had informed us he was on his way, after waiting a whole day, but three hours later found out Maytag had cancelled the ticket!!! Maytag's troubleshooting guide is nothing more than "Is the fridge light ON?". We have had been Maytag customers since the 1970s... Loved the old units, they worked like a champ... I purchased all Maytag appliances for multiple homes I built... BUT MAYTAG CAN KISS ALL THAT GOODBYE!

[sorry... this has been a very frustrating experience for us].

Thanks for the postings. Can anyone please tell me the what part I need to replace and where I can get one? Many thanks in advance.

Mine was just like that the other day. I had a repair service man come look at it and the timer on it went bad. He fixed it and now it is working fine. Mine is only 5 years old too.

Hi,

As the weather is getting warmer for many people their freezer and/or refrigerator do not work right because of a dirty condenser coil...there are also many other things that can go wrong. If you are hearing a clicking or buzzing then check out the last two tips.

Kenmore 21 refrigerator not getting cold - freezer still pretty cold (top) - perhaps not all the way

you have a defrost prblem or a leak in the sealed system.if you see frost built up on back freezer wall then it is a defrost problem also check evaporator fan motor to see if it is running.if machine is in defrost you wont hear it.so when compressor is running see if fan is running.

Sounds like a defrost problem or dirty coils under the machine. Check to see if there is any frost buildup in the back wall of the freezer. If so, it is not defrosting as it should.
  • possible causes:
  1. bad defrost timer/control board
  2. bad defrost heater (in freezer)
  3. bad thermo switch in freezer
If you don’t know what these are then unplug the machine and let the ice melt in the freezer overnight with the door open. Then try it the next day, if is cooling fine then you need to have a service person replace one of the above items.
