Same problem with Caplio R7. Was fine yesterday, but noticed odd colouring on LCD during shooting pictures. Intermittent, shots ok. Today it just jammed when turned on, lens stuck in open position, error code shown on screen 00-00-00-30-00-28. Removed battery, replaced, re-tried, no change. Charged battery, retried, same. Returning under warranty.

The lens won't close and it says
I have recharged the battery but I cannot get anything to work.

  • Anonymous Aug 28, 2008

Less than two months old - same issue - very disappointed to say the least.

camera 4 weeks old lens will come out sometimes but then if wont focus and will not g back in. returning to shop.

Lens stuck open - does Ricoh have any answers?

  • vodyssey Sep 17, 2008

I have exactly the same problem. Camera started taking photos in a sort of blueish tint and not focusing properly in low light conditions and then just stopped working with the lens remaining in an extended position. Comes up with the Error Message 00-00-00 30-00-28 - apparently relating to a misfuctioning lens. Am trying to contact Ricoh to return and when I got through the number hung up on me. Great!!

  • Camsdad2005 Oct 24, 2008

Yes, same issue....Ricoh R7 Capilio - lens is stuck, and will not retract. Battery Fully charged. Camera says error 3--01-29 (was also taking rather blue'ish shots and had noticeable colour flare on LCd screen when shooting into light.

Anyone able to help assist with a fix for this - is it a common problem
I wonder.. I have seen others posting with the same issue

My caplio Rè lens won't close, code 30 02 29

  • Gary_AU Nov 09, 2008

Have had this same problem - sent in to Ricoh and they said that sand was stuck in lens (I don't believe this explanation). Three weeks for ricoh to repair under warrantee but came back and wouldn't focus. Back again to Ricoh for another three week warrantee repair. Now back and battery lasts a few photos then 'dies'. Should have stayed with the trusty old Canon Ixus!

Lens won't retract, move or focus. It's completely frozen in place and the camera won't shut off as a result.

  • darbylovelet Nov 12, 2008

Lens is completely frozen. Won't retract, move or focus. Camera won't shut off as a result. I've tried emailing Ricoh at two different email addresses ([email protected], [email protected]) as well as submitting a request for support here:

Both email addresses are apparently no longer valid/working and I've received no response from Ricoh with the online support request. As a last resort, I tried the 800 number on the warranty card. The phone tree has no option for the Caplio R7 and you have to submit a credit card number for a $19 payment before they will connect the call. What BS! Anyone else had any luck contacting Ricoh from the US?

  • Anonymous Nov 19, 2008

Exact same problem. And what a useless support site. The forms were clearly designed by a monkey and it keeps telling me the serial number is wrong. Sheesh, if you're going to design unreliable products, at least make reporting the errors a breeze. Bad Ricoh,

  • cm2white Nov 24, 2008

same problem, caused by a fall onto gravel trail from 3 foot high. Camera never seemed very robust, and this confirms my impression.

  • alligee2000 Dec 05, 2008

I have the same problem. took a photo and then it wouldnt shut lens as normal. now i can't use my camera at all for taking photos. can anyone help?

  • stonymachine Dec 18, 2008

Ricoh Caplio R7 Camera will not switch on. Sometimes the green auto focus light on the front flashes once briefly and then nothing. Anyone else had the same problem?

  • petaoverseas Jan 28, 2009

For info. I had the same problem, the lens wouldn't retract. But horrors, I had gone to the beach and taken some pictures! So the camera went off for repair under warranty, and now I've been told they found a grain of sand in it, so no warranty cover. And A$300 to repair. For a camera 9 months old, and hardly ever on the beach, and didn't leave my hand, I am NOT impressed. So beware. If they can get out of fixing this, they will. The problem had happened before, so I do not believe that the sand was the only thing happening.

  • alison w48 Feb 10, 2009

have an R7 same story lens stuck out. went back undr warrenty before Christmas, was returned repaired but has got stuck again. not amused as now out of warrenty.

  • Anonymous Feb 27, 2009

Same problem. I had my camera for 2 days and the lens got stuck.. that camera was replaced directly. But then the same problem after 11 months - still under warranty but because they found sand somewhere, its not covered.  And the cost to repair is nearly as much as the camera!!!!

This is a known problem, they wont easily admit it but we had 2 R6's and an R7 with the exact same issue. If you look on ricoh site they had a firmware patch for the R6 to try and fix this issue but it dis not work.

Lady at ricoh UK admitted there is a design fault with the Ricoh R6 and R7 and she sent me an R8 which has a whole new redesigned mechanism.

Dont let them sell you useless kit, get a replacement free of charge or complain.

Same problem as everyone else and I do believe it's a design flaw. I bought mine in Japan 10/06 and came back to US, used it for 2 months and lens jammed while I was taking photos outside (desert). A wind blew by and easily jammed my lens... Auto focus kept trying to focus on a piece of dust in the lens and eventually got stuck. Sent camera to CRIS camera to fix and they honored my warranty once. I sent my box with instructions and very clean (Like new when bought) and camera was fixed fine but box and instructions came back like it's been crapped on... Couple months later, same problem with jammed lens, and eventually the error message like everyone else. This camera is so fragile, it should only be used inside a clean, non-dusty environment (like inside a lab?) I hope Ricoh US will give me a new R8 too but highly doubt if they'd do anything for me at all... A very nice looking doorstopper for now...

Refered to the following when I was encountered such lens error. it is possible the gear stuff in dry without lubricant for lens open / focus adjustment, after cleaning and greasing the gears, my R7 works again.

except the dust inside the lens assembly and the picture getting a bit clurr.

At you can download new firmware with version 1.28. After downloading, extracting and copying the files to the SD card you must execute de files and the new firmware is rewritten. Instuctions are included in the download.
Surpricingly, when I executed (MODE and Playback button 3 sec.) without the firmwarefiles in place (misstake of myself) the camera displayed that de rewrite was unsuccesfull,

but suddenly the camera came to life!!!

The camera worked well since, with de original 1.26 firmware.

Same problem with my R7 Camera. what i do to my camera if i want to shoot is to switch it on and tride forcing the lens to come out by pulling the lens out slowly. if i focus something and it gets blur what i do is to adjust the lens manually.. For me it is the best thing to do with my 1 month old ricoh to make it useful since im from philippines and no service center for ricoh here. my friend both this in singapore...

A lens is very much like a screw in the sense that if it comes off its threads, it won't work properly. It'll get stuck once extended - or maybe won't even come out - and makes a clicking noise because it's trying to realine itself. I don't know if that's any help but it's my thoughts on it!

Lens won't close and On/Off button doesn't work

Even though the battery appears to be charging it may be shot. Some batteries if they run down too far can not be recharged. You need to try a new battery in the camera.

The lens of my Sony Cyber-shot goes in and out ehrn turned on--the device then says to turn off then on again but it still won't work

This error indicate that focusing ring got stuck or jammed due to dust or sand enters the camera. What you can try to do is spray some compressed AIR into the lens to try to free up any sand or dust that may have worked its way in. If that doesn't help, you can gently bump the camera to try to free the focusing ring.
May be battery is not holding charge or possibly loose contact between the camera & battery terminal, Make sure that your battery is fully charged.
You can try to turn camera ON at the table (facing it to the ceiling), don't put camera down face to the floor when opening.
Else your camera need to be disassembled to get at the focusing ring at Service Center.

My Sony DSC-W230 turns on and lens keep opening and closing, and then it shows "turn power off and on again". how do i fix this ?

This sounds like a stuck lens. Here is a good blog about things to try to fix it:
The blog is about a lens error, but when the camera lens opens and closes, there is often a problem with the lens.
Also make sure the battery is fully charged, and good. Also make sure the contacts are clean on the battery, and also inside the camera.
If all fails to get it working again, get an estimate on repair first, since the cost can justify just going ahead and buying a new camera.
Good luck, and hope this helps.

Lense error, restart your camera

If i told you to smack it around a bit would ytou believe me?

But that is the fix Canon use to get rid of these errors 98% of the time.
Charge or change the battery, insert it tuen camer on when it goes off smack it hard into your palm a few times and turn it back on.
Just incase there is some dirt/dust stopping the lens from extending blow a can of compressed air around it and give it another few slaps . Sometimes after about 20-30 ngoes of this the camera will jump back into service Believe me it does work nearly all the time Canon charged me $90 to do this trick

Lens problem

I have had the same problem with a different camera, the problem started when I did not have sufficient battery charge to turn the camera off completely. The camera shut down, but the lense did not retract.
You can try a few things:
First try remove the batteries and holding the power button as if you are going to start the camera, then reinsert and try again. (make sure they are fully charged first)
You can try connecting the camer to the computer before you turn it on. Connected to the computer the camer goes through a slightly different start up procedure.
Try switching it to playback mode on restart.
If these fail I have a couple of tricks up my sleeve, but need to know the answer to these questions:
1. has it suffered water damage?
2. has it been dropped recently?
3. what happend when the lense did not close properly? Is this the first time?
4. Can you access the menus when "restart camera" is on screen?
Just post a comment back

IR-300 Olympus

I had what sounds like the same problem. The camera was dropped and the shutter was stuck open. Just kept showing error message.
As I felt I had nothing to lose I began tapping it on a soft book and the shutter started to appear. I then shut it just using the end of my finger. When I then turned the camera on again it opened and shut when turned off. It has worked fine ever since.
Seems a rather poor design.
Hope this helps. Very best regards Peat.
