The message I receive when I try and run Age of Empires II is "Could not initialize graphics system. Make sure that your video card and driver are compatible with DirectDraw." I've got LG Flatron L1919S monitor and ATI Radeon RX2600 Diamond 512MB GFX card

I have the same problem, but it happens with Battlefield 1942. Yesterday it was running without any problems at all, and today the screen gives the "mode not supported" message.

My 933sn has this stupid problem. when playing old games at 800x600 half the screen gets streched vertically. i play all the other games at 1360x768 but some like age of empires 2 or counter strike,...

Try changing the resolution your TV is putting out; it may not be in full screen, but at least everything won't be stretched! 800x600 has a different ratio than 1360x768

No display under 1024x768

I have the same problem with 800x600. I've found that by setting the refresh rate to 56 Hz, I can get the games to play. For instance Age-Of-Empires II only works with this method. My old monitor worked fine, and this works at 1280x1024.

Samsung SyncMaster 17" LCD Blacks out

If you have a second monitor, you could use your computer until the monitor goes black... then plug in a replacement monitor. My guess is that one will display black too...

My gut feeling is that your VGA card is on the fritz... I'm not convinced it's your monitor. Do you have a replacement VGA card you can try? I'll bet that'll take care of the problem.

How do you get the covers off? "Does not support this mode"

Well here I am again trying to get the covers off of an unfamilar device. I found the 2 screws at the bottom and removed them.. On a hp 1702 I just forced the sides open, pulling and bending to pop the cover off.. How do you get this mag cover off?

Problem indicates on screen "Does not support this mode" on power up, then screen goes blank. OSD doesnt work... blank screen... Does not support message looks good though for an instant...

Monitor out of range

Most commonly, this problem is caused by an incorrect refresh rate setting. LCD monitors typically DO NOT support refresh rates higher than 60hz - and this is no exception. Try running the game in "safe mode" if it has one. Adjusting the in-game video settings should solve the problem, just look for a screen refresh rate or any video-related setting with a number followed by "hz". Set it to 60, everything should be fine.

It could also be that at some point the game changes resolution (this frequently occurs if there is an in-game movie or cut-scene). In this case the resolution settings for the in-game movie might be at fault, check them if you can.
