Before my head explodes I thought I'd ask here. The problem started with a 500 GB WD HDD when it apparently had bad sectors and prevented Vista (32 bit) from starting (on PC1). Bought a new HDD that...

You should boot from a Linux live cd and see if you can copy the data. Hopefully the bad sectors are not where your data is stored, but if that is the case you can use Hiren's Boot CD also booted from CD (not runned from Windows) and use one of it's tools for bad sectors recovery. That should isolate the bad sectors from beeing accesed to that the OS could run on that HDD, but this also means that some of your data may be lost. If you don't have a Linux CD get it from here . Also download Hiren's Boot CD from here .

EventViewer Error

Every time you get messages talking about "TIME PERIOD" you have problems with transference... this can be caused by:

Cables Damaged
Units or Drives Damaged
RAM damaged failing
Discs or info damaged
Power failures in or out the units
software (operative system) damaged
not so common, virus activity

Just to make an example: if you are trying to get information from a CD to the HD and that happens... probably the Compact Disc is damaged or the CD Reader or the HD is.

Good Luck and try to specify all you can when you have problems... otherwise it is very hard to help. Computers are almost like human body, anything could happen to them, even the rarest and stupidest thing can drive your systems crazy...

How to remove bad sectors from hard disc

Bad sectors are usually the result of physical damage to the disk, so you're not going to be able to remove them easily. A full format *may* clear them, but I'd expect them to fail again.
If you run a scan disk it will mark them as bad so the OS shouldn't attempt to write to them again. It will also attempt to recover the data from the bad sector and copy it somewhere else on the drive.

You cannot recover bad sectors. Your disc is damaged and the drive has removed the bad sectors from being writable. You need to replace your hard drive asap before it breaks entirely. You're going to lose all your remaining data on the disc if you do not back it up immediately. Good luck, Peter
