Typically the best way would be to remove the interior trim piece from the shelf. Then have a friend hold the MDF board up from inside the trunk. Then run either screws or bolts/nuts through from the interior all the way through the MDF. Replace interior trim piece and it should be held in tight.
Another less intrusive way would be to use a strong adhesive, such as "Liquid Nails" to secure the MDF to the bottom of the shelf. You'd need to figure a way to hold the MDF to the bottom of the shelf for quite awhile (8-24 hours) to make sure their is good adhesion.
The large block is a factory amplifier - in your car (as was in mine) you had a partially-amplified system. The front speakers were driven at speaker level from the head unit, but the rears were fed a line-level signal from the head unit to the amp, which then boosted to speaker level. The harness then sent the speaker level signal to each rear speaker.
What you can do is fit your new head unit. The fronts will interface perfectly with no issues. For the rear, run new wires from the adapter harness at the back of your head unit, back to the new rear speakers, and connect them directly. Then everything will work as it should.
I would run a 250-500 watt 2 channel high input capable amp. run the original wires to the orginal speakers and jump off the original wires to the amp to push the secondary 6X9's you have. So my understanding is. you want the 4 original speakers and subs and add 2 additional speakers making 6 speakers not uncluding subs..
Head units care barely push 4 decent normal size speaker. Usually they are 30-55watt per channel. If you have 2 non sub speakers that are 250 watt max.. that's 500 total but don't push the amp all the way...start with it at 1/4 and listen to your stereo at a higher than nominal volume slowly turning up the amp.
My suggestion is to go to your local audio shop and pickup a dash kit and wiring harness to hook up the din head unit. I actually wouldn't recommend putting in aftermarket speakers unless you don't plan on reselling or they are blown. You could hook a sub up by running your power wire to your amp like usual, hook your amp turn-on wire to an accessory wire and buy a "line level converter" you will tap into factory speaker wires with this and it will convert it to RCAs. You will only need to do this if you are using the factory head unit. Also, unless the aftermarket unit has features that you want that the factory one doesn't, I wouldn't bother with that either. what do you mean? distorted? low? echoey? i know you checked the wiring but try one more time. did you use a wire harness? remember the speaker wires out the radio with the black line on them is the negative side. make sure whatever color wire from the stereo that you plug to the car factory wire to, and know if it was positive or negative when you go plug it on the speaker.
