Question about Harman Kardon AVR 125 Receiver

HK avr125 5.1, no display, no functions.

My HK avr125 has no display and no functions except the input indicators and the surround mode indicators light up. There is no functions at all, I tried to reset the unit but that did not help.
I did find that there is no -30 volts going to IC74. My question is how is the -30 volts being generated at Q901.

I have the same issue with my avr125. Just stopped working at all. Have you come up with a solution yet?

I have the same problem. Just no display but the unit does turn on.

I found that the C901 cap on the power supply is scorched but I could barely tell but it is for sure toast. I am going to replace it and post here how it turned out

Same problem. C901 on the vertically-mounted input board next to the power supply transformer was burned. Replaced with ceramic cap from RS with same specs. Still did not work. Talked to Jeb, great guy at HK tech support. He suggested that R901 would probably be blown and maybe 902 also. These are flame-proof resistors and do not show damage. Tested with multimeter and Jeb was spot on. Replaced 1w resistors with 5w (all RS had) at same resistance. Works great.

AND you my friend are spot on also...
both R901 and R902 showed open when reading with a meter. so they were both bad but looked good. I replaced them with what they were (.47ohm) and the cap that was visibly blown and everything is back working and in good order and I am watching TV again in surround..
    Thank you my friend.
I didn't see your post til just this morning when I decided to start looking again at getting it fixed and ran across my old post.. I wonder why it never emailed me???
All well, it's fixed now... Thanks again

How do I fix my audio/video receiver that has no sound coming out of it?

If your unit has a speaker protection mode (5-8 second delay when 1st turned on) defective speakers and/or speaker wiring may be causing the protection circuit to do its job...protect the speakers. Disconnect all speakers and test HK in all modes (tuner, CD, DVD, etc.) using headphones. If you still cannot hear audio then it's time for a shop repair. Although I recommend factory authorized service whenever possible, a "local" shop that is certified by other well-known brands may be an option. If Yamaha, Onkyo or Luxman certified your local repair shop then it's a sure bet that they can properly repair HK's no longer under warranty.

HK AVR 125 display strobing and no sound, even in headphone jack

Hi...

Find someone that does TV or audio repair and have them open it up. A cable assembly may have loosened during the MOVE.

Cheers

All display lights are illuminated but device doesnt work

Do you hear the speaker protection relay click after about 10 seconds when you turn the receiver on? Does the display show PROTECTION on the display? These conditions indicate a bad channel that will keep the receiver from functioning but you still have lights. Steve

" display mode OFF"

You can select the display mode for the front display
of the SR7001.To select this mode, press the DISPLAY on the remote control or the front panel. When this button is pressed, the display mode is switched in the following sequence.Input Mode ? Surround Mode ? Auto display OFF ? Display OFF ? Normal Mode ? Input Mode Normal Mode: Displays the selected input function. If the function has been renamed using the Function Rename feature (see page 26), the renamed name appears on the display. Input Mode: Displays the input mode set via the Function Input Setup feature (see page 25). Surround Mode: Displays the status of the selected surround mode. Auto Display Off mode: The display is off. But, if you make a change to the unit such as the input or surround mode, the display will show that change, then go back to off after about 3 seconds. No gots. The 3485 is pre-digital stereo-only.

From the manual, page 19

"You may have observed that the HK 3485 is not equipped with digital audio inputs or surround sound decoding. If you prefer the complete home theater experience, you may wish to consider purchasing a fullfeatured Harman Kardon AVR Series audio/video receiver. However, we hope you will find that using a DVD player with the HK 3485 in smaller settings, such as a bedroom or den, surpasses the audio performance of most televisions, including those with onboard stereo speakers."

My surround sound speakers don't work. No power

LCD will display which speakers are active. And this depends on 2 things: the source signal and decoder mode.
If source signal is stereo, only front L+R speakers are used. For 5.1 signal (for example DVD over HDMI / optical/coax spdif) all speakers installed (which are not set to None) are used.
To listen to stereo input signal using all speakers, switch decoder to enhancer mode.

Is this only when using external inputs? The manual says the Tone Control will not function in Direct Mode. Try Stereo and various DSP surround modes to see if the Tone Control works.

The indicator is telling you you have a 2-channel input. You may have the Blu-Ray connected wrong. Or the source is only Stereo. I need more details to assess that.

The sound coming from all speakers is normal if you have any surround mode selected, regardless of the characteristics of the source

I imagine if you experiment you might find all speakers playing for any number of 2-channel sources, not just Blu-Ray. Besides actual Pro Logic decoding, the various surround modes can provide some interesting effects on non Dolby Surround material.

I recommend that you try them all on various recordings and you may find one or another of them preferable over vanilla stereo. I find that any given artist or music type, even within a given CD, may sound 'better' with different surround settings.
