My HK avr125 has no display and no functions except the input indicators and the surround mode indicators light up. There is no functions at all, I tried to reset the unit but that did not help.
I did find that there is no -30 volts going to IC74. My question is how is the -30 volts being generated at Q901.
Same problem. C901 on the vertically-mounted input board next to the power supply transformer was burned. Replaced with ceramic cap from RS with same specs. Still did not work. Talked to Jeb, great guy at HK tech support. He suggested that R901 would probably be blown and maybe 902 also. These are flame-proof resistors and do not show damage. Tested with multimeter and Jeb was spot on. Replaced 1w resistors with 5w (all RS had) at same resistance. Works great.
Hk 230 lost presets, erractic. will not power on goes off quick. . last time sprayed contact cleaner all connectors & bd. connections & it worked. A year later this time the same symtoms. switch on the module connects to transformer caused the receiver to reset. & lose all presets. it is a reset switch i also found out after i fixed it.. sprayed contact cleaner in switch that & it sings again. thank you to the person that suggested this in some site..mine is fixed!!!!

If your unit has a speaker protection mode (5-8 second delay when 1st turned on) defective speakers and/or speaker wiring may be causing the protection circuit to do its job...protect the speakers. Disconnect all speakers and test HK in all modes (tuner, CD, DVD, etc.) using headphones. If you still cannot hear audio then it's time for a shop repair. Although I recommend factory authorized service whenever possible, a "local" shop that is certified by other well-known brands may be an option. If Yamaha, Onkyo or Luxman certified your local repair shop then it's a sure bet that they can properly repair HK's no longer under warranty.
Do you hear the speaker protection relay click after about 10 seconds when you turn the receiver on? Does the display show PROTECTION on the display? These conditions indicate a bad channel that will keep the receiver from functioning but you still have lights. Steve

"You may have observed that the HK 3485 is not equipped with digital audio inputs or surround sound decoding. If you prefer the complete home theater experience, you may wish to consider purchasing a fullfeatured Harman Kardon AVR Series audio/video receiver. However, we hope you will find that using a DVD player with the HK 3485 in smaller settings, such as a bedroom or den, surpasses the audio performance of most televisions, including those with onboard stereo speakers."
LCD will display which speakers are active. And this depends on 2 things: the source signal and decoder mode. If source signal is stereo, only front L+R speakers are used. For 5.1 signal (for example DVD over HDMI / optical/coax spdif) all speakers installed (which are not set to None) are used. To listen to stereo input signal using all speakers, switch decoder to enhancer mode.
The indicator is telling you you have a 2-channel input. You may have the Blu-Ray connected wrong. Or the source is only Stereo. I need more details to assess that.
The sound coming from all speakers is normal if you have any surround mode selected, regardless of the characteristics of the source
I imagine if you experiment you might find all speakers playing for any number of 2-channel sources, not just Blu-Ray. Besides actual Pro Logic decoding, the various surround modes can provide some interesting effects on non Dolby Surround material.
I recommend that you try them all on various recordings and you may find one or another of them preferable over vanilla stereo. I find that any given artist or music type, even within a given CD, may sound 'better' with different surround settings.
