Question about Car Audio & Video

My new head unit won't work

I have a 1997 pontiac sunfire. I bought a Kenwood MP538U head unit and i installed it today. All the wiring seems to be correct the fuses are not blown and the battery is connected. I hooked up the head unit and it won't even light up. We put in the old radio and now that one doesn't even light up. I thought it could be the theftlock thing on the radio but it would at least illuminate and say something would it not?

could it be any other problem besides a blown fuse? we replaced both of them and it still doesn't work somewhere along the lines. Why didn't I just let Best Buy install it! haha

i got a harness that plugs into the factory harness. The interior lamp doesn't work but that's because we took out the fuse since it didn't turn off if we left the door open and we tried to put new fuses back in but they blew every time. But yeah, i got a harness adapter.

I have a 99 pontiac grand am. I had a factory cassette player in it that I switched out to my b/f's. I finally got my own (alpine) and installed it today it simply wont turn on at all. I checked the wiring and it is correct and tightly secured. I also checked all the fuses under the hood and in the car everything looked fine. My b/f is convinced that fuses dont have to break to be blown so now I cant tell cause I was taught that they break thats how you tell. Everything else in the car works fine but I cant for the life of me figure out what the issue is. HELP PLEASE!!!! Also I did take the alpine back out and reconnect the unit that was previously working moments prior and it also is not responsive now....sheesh why does best buy have to charge so much for little tasks like this....any help would be appreciated

My thought is that there is a fuse blown. If you put the factory back in and that didn't light up then there is definately a fuse blown. Correct me if I'm wrong but guessing that you didn't cut the harness, by the fact that you could put the factory unit back in, you probaby don't have a problem with wiring. Aslong as you matched up wiring colors with the harnesses the wires should be fine. The next problem should be a fuse. Not all fuses blown in a way that is easy to see. Just replace the "radio" fuse in your fuse panel and give that a shot. If you still have problems get back to me. Good Luck!

Best Buy! HAHAHAHAHA!!! Did you cut the harness? or did you get a harness that plugs into the factory harness? Are there any accessories that also don't work or is it just the radio?

Ok, you took out the factory head unit, then plugged in the Kenwood, it didn't work so you tried the factory one to see if that one works and it didn't I hate to ask but did the factory headunit work before you took it out? If it did then check ALL fuses, even check the ones under the hood. CHECK THEM ALL. If the factory one worked before and now it doesn't then it is either a fuse or a cut wire somewhere. Good Luck

Cooling fan

Yes, it's probably the PCM. I had the same problem, and upon replacing the PCM it started working again. If your cooling sending unit is new, and so many parts of your fan assembly are new, it's probably not receiving the signal from the sending unit. Hope this helps.

Kenwood KDC-MP538U does not save settings like time and date

I have had the same problem, my problem was that i accidentaly hooked up the constant wire to the switched, and the switched to the constant, causing it to turn off completely, resetting everything. So if this is the problem then just switch the wires in the back of thew head unit, should be the fatter yellow wire, and the fatter red wire
hope this helps

I'm trying to install a new radio in my 97 pontiac sunfire and i need a wiring diagram for the factory wires in the car to match them up.

a radio install kit will have a diagram with it, plus the connectors you get with the kit should have writing on the wires to tell you what they are, the radio wires will have the same writing
