A sewing machine I work on last week, I put a new needle in the needle clamp & thought I had it correctly inserted,, but it wouldn't work,, so I went back & checked the needle again & found I had to unscrew the needle clamp screw even more than normal to insert the needle then it work perfectly.

some needles & thread don't work togeather--here's a tip
Cut 6-8 inch piece of thread of the spool you are going to use for your project
Take the needle you are going to use for the project
& insert the thread thru the eye of the needle
& lift one end of the thread to a 45 degree angle
& if the needle is the right size for the thread it will slide down the thread
But if the needle hangs on the thread you need one size larger needle for the thread

also clean under the needle plate where the feed dogs are for lint
& also in the bobbin area for lint & loose threads

WHY IS MY THREAD FRAYING AT NEEDLE

Could be multiple things, but the first thing I would try is a top-stitch needle. Also, be sure the needle eye is the correct size for the thread you are using. Another possibility is changing the brand of thread.

My Pfaff hobby 1200 keeps breaking the thread while free motion quilting.

I'd try switching the needle type & size and then a different brand of thread.

Thread breaking or fraying when free motion stippling

Oh, yeh, one more thing I just thought of: Rethread the top thread and make sure the thread is not hanging up on the spool, spool pin, or wrapped around a thread guide. When my thread breaks after 3-4 inches, it's usually because something is stopping the top thread.

Can the presser foot be raised slightly on pfaff tiptronic 2030 to facilitate free motion quilting? There is not enough clearance with feed dogs down to freely move material to quilt. Thank you.

You need a special foot for free motion quilting--it is slightly shorter in height than a regular presser foot, which essentially provides space between the presser foot and the needle plate to manually move the fabric. Sometimes machines came with a standard darning foot accessory. Your Pfaff dealer probably has at least one style in stock. But there are other specialty feet you can probably use, ie Big Foot, clear free motion foot, C-shaped, oval, etc. You can also purchase a shank adapter (verify it is the correct shank for your machine) and use it with a kit of snap-on presser feet so you can have a variety of presser feet for different functions.

The top thread breaks

1. the needle thread is not threaded properly

2. The needle thread tension is to tight

3. The needle is bent or blunt

4. The needle is incorrectly inserted

5. The needle thread & the bobbin thread are not set under the presser foot when starting to sew

6. the threads were not drawn to the rear after sewing

7. The thread is either to heavy or to fine for the needle

8. Try a different spool or cone of thread

Pfaff quilt expression 4 It shreds thread when free machine quilting and will not cut threads with the cutter. I need to be able to fmq without worrying. I have had a new cutter and keep cleaning...

Are you using the right needles, size and type? Before, you wreck your material, take it in and have it serviced. I know everyone hates to pay for service, but if you like your machine it will be worth it to have it running at its peak. Just like a car, we spend tons on them but expect a sewing machine to never need anything. Remember, it is worth it.

Thread breaks

If the thread is feeding from the spool without hanging up, the problem is within the threading system.

If this machine auto-threads, try to manual threading.

Call your dealer and tell them what is happening and you need their assistance. The machine may have to be serviced. Take a sample of the problem with you.

Too many bells and whistles can sometimes be, too many bells and whistles!

Just bought a brand new Pfaff Quilt Expression 4.0 and the top thread keeps getting shredded and breaking while doing free motion quilting. I've checked threading diagrams, changed to four different...

this is a known issue with the pfaff.....i have just bought the machine and it has thread uptake issues...thread tension issues and it comes unthreaded by itself often...leaving globs of thread on the bottom stuck in the feed dogs and under the throat plate.....then the stitches are not properly balanced because the tension gets too loose on the bobbin thread....very disappointed to find out it is a known issue with all the viking husqvarna made machines...which are pfaff, janome and viking.....sux.

Free motion quilting skipped stitches, breaking threads

Might be that you need to lower the tensions quite a bit, you'll have to juggle with top and bottom tensions though, and experiment for just this operation with the Sensormatic.
