Unable to take audio files off Mini Disc player to PC...

I have downloaded Sonic Stage, and have recorded some audio files onto my Sony Net MD walkman MZ-N510.

Everytime I try to transfer the audio files into My Library, it says the following error message...

"Unable to transfer the following tracks to My Library because they are recorded
by Net MD or another computer

Any help is greatly appreciated! New Mini Disc player and it is redundant if I can't transfer the audio!

Thanks :)

Hi LeBenji,

what you are seening may very well be normal, as the SONY corporation does not want you copy content from one computer to another. This a copy protection limitation, build-in to the MD line of products. There is now way known how to circumvent that, sorry.

They only thing you can do is, connected to the very same computer you used to store the content to the MD player and release it from the MD player, in order to be able to load another MD player with the same content.

Talk to SONY, they may not say it straight forward but that's it. Let them know how you feel about this ridiculous limitation.

Good luck.

There is a limitation set by Sony as an anti-piracy method/policy that prevents anything that wasn't originally put on the MD from the PC can't be imported.

This basically means that you can make the most beautiful recordings of stuff using your MD, but then you can't (easily) transfer them to your PC, because they didn't originally come from there!

Therefore you have to record from the MD. This is done by plugging a cable into the headphone socket of your MD and plugging the other end into either your line-in, aux etc on the (presumably) back of your computer's system box. You will then need to run some program on your computer that can record from one of those audio-ports. You can download one like Audacity from sourceForge if you don't have one. Next step is to click record on the program you are using on your computer and click Play on your MD...

    Good luck

Is there anybody out there...?

1) You can use Sony's Sonic Stage software to do a digital transfer of the mini disc to a .wav file. Sonic Stage is slow, but it is a very high quality digital transfer.

2) It's not like you are digging a ditch and getting worn out. So what if it is a real-time transfer? Find something to do. Read the New York Times on line. Make coffee. Call a friend.

3) There is nothing wrong with a good old-fashioned analog transfer (using the MD's analog output) into your computer's audio recorder (such as Audacity) - which gives you a digital file. That will be just fine for practice CDs for other choir members.

4) You can buy an MD deck or portable with a digital output - such as a Sony 940 or 640. There are many others.

How do I transfer music from mini disc to computer

There is a really crappy system that Sony has. See their website for Sonic Stage.

I recommend doing it line out to line in. The quality will be fine if you watch your levels. And it will be much simpler.

I have a sony mz r500 minidisk. can i upload songs to computer, after I use it to record to minidisk?

I don't think this is designated a "Net-MD" - is it? If so, by using the proprietary software (Sonic Stage), recordings can be transferred from the computer via USB to the MD unit - and back again.

You won't be able to "transfer" using a USB cable if the recordings didn't originate via Sonic stage. But you can record them in real time using Cool Edit, Adobe Audition or Audacity (free proggie!). This is the only way of transferring music from any non-USB equipped MD unit, or any MD unit that made the recordings with a mic or using line-in.

Issues downloading audio files from Sony minidisc to my computer

You can't. You can only transfer digital files from your pc to your Minidisc player., it's a one way street. there's no hack for it either as it's a basic hardware issue within the player itself.

If you want to download from the player to the pc you'll have to connect the audio output to your pc and record it the old-fashioned way which loses a bit of quality. All Minidisc compliant players were like this until the advent of the Hi MD format which succeeded the Net MD's as an anti-piracy measure.
