You can use any gif animater to creat that effect, If u have Corel Graphics Suite that u can use corel RAVE. Macromedea Flash could also be used. Also many other softwares, depends on tool u easily available. & Raw material you have. If you have a spinning glass balls then you can insert your loge also using any video editing tool like Premier or Pinacle Studeo. Clearify about your RAW meterial and tools then I can guide you more in detail.

Conversion of a coloured photo into B and W sketch

Many photo editing programs can apply "effects", such as sepia, "stained glass", water color etc. See if the editing programs you have access to can create this effect.

Programs such as Adobe Fireworks or Photoshop have these capabilities.

Perhaps just turning off the color will give you what you're looking for, but you may lose the detail in your photo.

Check with your University IT department to see what photo editing software is supported, or talk to someone in the Art department.

Transition effects without scripting

since you did not tell me what software you have, I suggested you to try SWISHMAX2.
To create transition you just put the object and choose the effect.
You can try the trial version in swishzone.com
In the forum Swish communities you can have more effects for free. Also tutorials are available.
If you dont know how to start it, just let me know.
