Macbook does not have an ink cartridge, your printer does. Find out what printer you have and go to the store. Buy appropriate cartridge, it has instructions on how to install once you have it.

/usr/libexec/cups/backend/lpd failed

This sounds like a printer issue rather than something wrong with your Mac. When you refill your printer ink cartridges the ink level setting won't change, and if you let the ink level go down too far before refilling the printer marks the cartridge as empty and locks it out. (something like that)

Try this... It should work on most newer model printers.

Shut down your Mac. (important) Turn the printer off and leave it off for one or two minutes. Turn it back on and wait until it goes through all of its whirring and clicking and chugging start-up noises. When it's quiet you should end up with a flashing "E" or an upside-down "u" on the display. Find the Reset or Stop button on the printer and hold it down for 6 seconds. The display should clear and show the number "1".

Turn on your computer and print. If it works, you're done.

If that didn't work pull down the Apple menu and choose "About This Mac". If it says Version 10.6.8 you're about to spend $29 because the message "/usr/libexec/cups/backend/lpd failed" was common with that version of OS X, and that was the last version of Snow Leopard 10.6. Click the "Software Update..." button which will open the App Store. Shell out your 29 bucks for Mavericks OS X 10.9.

The only other solution would be to replace "lpd" from a different computer that's running 10.6.7, which is doubtful. (unless you have a backup)

Good Luck!

My Macbook will not print utilizing the black ink cartridge on multiple printers

Dennis, is this happening on all applications or is it just the one e.g. word. I have read in some cases this can be caused by a font conflict. You could open up font book within the applications folder and this will show you whether there are duplicate fonts open, I would resolve these duplicates and try printing again.

The screen on my Apple MaxBook Pro with 17" display started flashing repeatedly and then went blank. I took out the battery and unpluged it. When I pressed the power button, nothing. I did...

Have you tried starting from the system disks that came with the computer? Put the disk into the computer and start up holding the C key down.

MacBook Pro won't print to my Epson Stylus Photo 300 - it used to

The flashing green light normally means that the computer is sending information to the printer.
If the printer is receiving information, but is not printing, the cartridges may need replacing, or the printer may be faulty.
Do you have a friend with a printer? Can you try printing to their printer just to check your computer is ok?

Cant get Z23 to work on Macbook

Are you referring to a Lexmark Z23 printer? If so, have you tried the driver here?:

This is the official Lexmark driver from Lexmark. It only lists OS 10.1, 10.2 and 10.3, but you can try it to see if it works. If it doesn't, you can probably get a free open-source driver. Let me know if Lexmark's driver doesn't work, and I'll explain how to use the alternate driver.

If you've printed to the Z23 before, and has stopped working, have you replaced the ink cartridges? Your printer manual explains how to do it, but usually it involves opening the printer and carefully disconnecting the cartridges from the printer. *Don't force anything or you may damage the printer.* If you aren't sure how to get them out, I can help. Just post a comment here. (The link should be at the top, right side of this page.

Good luck! Let us know if this fixed your problem.

My Mac wont print color to my HP printer. The color ink is full and my Dell prints fine to the printer

There is a setting in the print dialogue that allows you to set that the printer prints only in grayscale. There is a chance that you have that setting changed and it is printing in grayscale each time you print by default.
