I have a General Electric JNM1731DM1WW. the buttons are fading out and I am required to set the time in order for it to function properly. However I can't since the AM/PM button doesn't work. Also some of the numbers don't work...1, 2, 8, 0 and also the fan. Keypad seems to be fading away.

To be on the safe side, contact the manufacturer. Some GE microwaves were having problems that could cause them to start later on their own and were a house fire hazard. Please unplug the microwave now.
try resetting the clock. If it is digital, push the clock button and then the number buttons untill you have the proper time displayed...then push the clock button again. If your clock and timer are manual, try pushing in the clock lever and turning it 1/4 turn. If this works it would indicate that your timer has a start and finish time and that the oven is not working because the clock has rotated around to the finish time.
Hello there: these microwaves have a replaceable display part that are generally supplied by a local appliance manufature so contact them first to see if they have the part You have to first remove the outer cover of the unit then you will see the part that needs to be replaced in the front it should be held on by svrews or clips just remove the screws and clips and unplug the wire that attaches from it then remove it and get the new on and put the new one on ok in the reverse order you removed the old one this part generally cost 50 dollars or so ok Hope this helps you out pleae feel free to rate this solution it helps us give the best solutions for our askers Best regards Mike
The brains of these things are the complex the keypad brains and all that are usually on one unit. Call up and appliance parts store and describe to them what it is usually they'd know right away and will order the parts for you. Of course you have to wait whether it is worth the price of the parts and drama vs. getting a brand new machine.
In most cases, these are VFD type not LCD type. In any case, when a VFD fades over time, that is aging.
Unfortunately, GE does not make the VFD displays available as a separate part, so the only option is to replace the entire "smart board". And they can be expensive at times. But if you do it yourself, you save a lot on labor.
If you or someone you know decide to work on it, we have *critical* safety, disassembly, and troubleshooting info at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk
You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here: http://tinyurl.com/gv383
There should also be a very helpful "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel.
