It does come up to a blue screen. I do not have the software for Windows 2000 Professional which is what is installed on the laptop. I have Windows XP and those drivers, they are from my desktop. Could I install that on the laptop? The only thing she uses it for is to surf the net. So it does not have to be fancy. If I can install the XP how do I wipe out the hard drive?

Re: Won't boot up to windows
Because of anti-piracy laws you will not be able to use your XP on the laptop. You will need to buy another xp to Install. Win 2000 pro is very prone to blue screen and crashes. You will need to re-install win 2000 pro.
When you buy and install xp it will reformat (wipe) the hard drive for you.

It is most certainly a driver, but if you cant access the safe mode also that could be a hardware issue.. Try to troubleshoot with a windows installation cd. Put it in and boot the pc. It will start the windows instalation, you choose repair computer and not install windows. The command prompt will open, try to troubleshoot from there.. Thanks!

So many computer face this blue screen fetal errors on windows.
This error comes usually when there is problem in software or driver compatibility issue with hardware or operating system. Also this error comes when there is bed indexing unit in hard drive. You can solve this errors with following 2 methods. (1)When you power up the computer press F8 key then enter in safe mode. Then if you are able to enter in safe mode then uninstall driver or software which you installed recently and face this error. (2)If you are not able to enter in safe mode Then you need to fix error on hard drive. For that you need windows disk or recovery disk. Boot your computer with that disk For that when you power up the computer press F1 or F2 "del" key to enter in bios. Then go to boot menu and set first boot device as your cd or dvd rom. Then save settings and exit bios. Insert windows disk in cd /dvd rom. Then it boot with that disk. Then you get this message "Press any key to boot from cd.." Then press any key. Then follow the procedure then enter in recovery console mode then type in prompt "chkdsk /r" Then type "y" Then it fix error on hard drive. Then check if again you are not able to enter in windows then boot again and this time choose "R" option for repair previous windows " then it repairs old windows then it loads again old windows. Thanks for using FixYa.

how to perform a repair installation
this is for xp, but its similar on 2000 and on vista.
insert your Windows XP Setup CD, and restart your computer.
1.Whenthe Press any key to boot from CD message is displayed on your screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.
ifnot then the computer is not set to start up from a cd, you can eitherenter the setup / bios to change that setting OR right when you powerup the computer look at the screen it will say what button to press inorder to enter boot menu or bios, it will very likely be button F12 or similar, it should say on the screen when you power on.
if it doesn't, then you need to go into the bios and change the boot order so that the computer starts from the CD first.
after that you should be able to start from the cd and install the OS (Operating system, eg.Windows)
here's some info on how to work the bios: http://www.whitecanyon.com/how-to-change-boot-order.php
Repeat step 1 when you have changed the boot order.
2.Press ENTER when you see the message To setup Windows XP now, and then press ENTER displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen.
3.Do not choose the option to press R to use the Recovery Console.
4.In the Windows XP Licensing Agreement, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.
5.Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the box, and then press R to repair Windows XP.
6.Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup.
7.Oneswindows is working you will need the drivers for your computer, theyare at the makers website, for hp and compaq. www.hp.com for acerhttp://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/downloads.html for all otherbrands go to google and write Brand drivers. Should get you to theright place. Dell is most likely www.dell.com and so on.
What is the boot order in the BIOS? Set that to 1=FDD 2=CD-ROM 3=HDD While the PC is still on, put the Windows CD in the drive Restart the PC, watch the screen for a prompt to boot from cd - press a key The installation will start, you will need to choose where to install Windows If you do not need to save any data, format the C: drive and install window there. Follow the prompts the rest of the way through the installation. You will need to enter the Windows License code at some point. It is a good idea to change the regional settings to match your location and how you want the date and time formatted. Most things should be detected and installed automatically, so you are safe to accept the defaults. After about 45 minutes you will need to restart the PC and then you should be ready to enjoy Windows 2000. Be sure to go to Windows Update and install all of the patches.
